People born in Ireland, or people who grew up with an Irish heritage/irish parents. That doesnt apply to half of The current "Ireland" team

Of the current squad only Carsley, Kilbane, McGeady and Folan weren't born in Ireland. Hardly half of the team and I think we know that know Kilbane regards himself as 100% Irish. I think if you looked at most international squads you'll find a similar amount of players not born in the country they're representing.

You said half the team. Carsley has said he played GAA in Cork with his cousins so he grew up with an Irish Heritage. It could also be argued so did Aidan Mc Geady. So it only leaves Folan. 2 of his grandparents were born in the West of Ireland. We don't know what impact that had on his growing up. So your statement about half the team is rubbins. Using your criteria, only one player on the team falls outside of it.

Well I've been accused of 'having an agenda', 'every post being on 2G' and told 'to talk about football' but I have some sympathy for Pablo here. He want's a team that has some pre-footballing connection with Ireland. He's quite clear that that doesn't necessarily mean being born in Ireland. Personally it's something I'd like. I dislike people who haven't a clue where their Irish grandmother was born, yet next minute think they're Irish.

Take Michael Robinson. He was in Match Weekly in one of those question/answer jobs about who would he most like to meet? Most put down the Queen, the Pope or Farrah Fawcett Majors at a swingers' party. He puts down 'Ron Greenwood (the then England Manager) on business.' The ink isn't dry and he's in the squad to play France. I met him in Reykjavik six years later and got talking. He starts coming out with all this 'I'm so proud to be Irish' cojones, and how his son's got a tricolour above his bed. He was close to going into Rose Dugdale mode. He then gets dropped by Jack and about a year later he's in a Spanish footy mag (he'd moved to Osasuna) claiming that although he played for Ireland he was English. I think he obtained Spanish citizenship, which incidently entails renouncing all other citizenships he'd ever had.

The point is, as eirebhoy says, other countries are equally (or more) guilty of this as/than Ireland. To play for Ireland is to qualify for Irish nationality - no laws have been changed to accomodate more footballers; in fact laws have been changed to make it more difficult.

As for half the 'current' Irish team being 'English', total tosh. I doubt it ever was - to use Pablo's qualification of Irishness - although there were certainly players who used the green shirt merely as a career move, not as a point of national pride.
This is the cooooooooooooolest footy forum I've ever seen!

The ignorance was in your statement ",,,,half the Irish team...", it displays a lack of knowledge about the Irish team. Prejudice is because you have a negative opinion based on false information and false assumptions.

you're ignorant because you can't spell ignorant.
you're predjudiced because you dont get to say who qualifies for Ireland and you are content to be prejudiced against fellas who wear the green jersey.
Was he crazy!! Yeah , in a very special way , an Irishman.

Ah its all clear to me now. Someone is ignorant because of a spelling mistake.

Glad you cleared that up and actually debated the point.

    At last a decent reply.

Are people not alarmed that a growing number of people are completely dissillusioned with the National team and have no identity with it?

That is because they are playing rubbish. This team has more Irish born players and players with Irish Heritage as you put it then the 1988 or the 1990 teams but more people got into them because they were more successfual and people seemed to think they were fighting for the jersey and this team was not. So there is no link between peoples disillusionment with the team and the fact we are the team is been taken over by a load of plastic paddies as you put it. The facts show more Irish born players in the squad now then there have been in a long time yet people are getting sick of the team and saying they are not putting in the effort and have no passion for the jersey.

    Spot on Neil.
    Just my spin on things.
I've no connection with football in my family and as a result have no connection with a domestic soccer team and as a result of this the National team is the be all and end all for me. Disillusioned is probably to big a word to use to describe how I feel towards the team now, but whatever I feel about those who play for us, its based on the passion they show while representing Ireland not whether they were all things green before they starting representing us.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!

It's not suprising to see Pablo's first contribution on this forum:
    http://foot.ie/showthread.php?t=421

    Interesting post:
"we all loved how Chaltons teams were sucessfull and the Morale of the nation was lifted. but The team of today is far more representative of the Irish people."

It's actually very interesting to search Pablo's posts in this forum. Before the world cup he was posting a lot and opening up many threads discussing Irish players abroad. Now when we are fielding teams that'd be close to 100% Irish by Pablo's definition he doesn't support us. Did the Eircom league bug bite or are you just one of those NeilMcD is describing?

It seems to me your only interest in 'supporting' Ireland is in promoting an extreme racial view point, of the type held by people like Hitler. I would say your support is more in pushing that view point rather then in supporting the team which you clearly don't in my opinion. I doubt most of the Irish team would want support from people with your view point so why not try supporting some one else, like combat18 for example? (assuming you are not already a member).
