Some RTE radio guy pronounced it Lill as well, maybe it's a received pronunciation.

Shame on the Hoops on this thread prattling on about "us" and "we" in relation to a foreign team.

    KOH
Why the shame? Referring to foreign clubs as "us" and "we" is pathetic. Not "prattling" at all.

Anyone hear Billo saying it's "really sad" that arsenal are out?

    Whinger. Ignore.

Liverpool is not in Eastern Kazachstan. Liverpool is the closest Premiership team to Dublin, a city that's a 20 minute hop from Dublin Airport, and closer to Dublin than Linfield, a genuine foreign club.

Lots of Irish people have a Premiership team as second team after the eL but only muppets would call say "we" when speaking about.

RTE's football coverage and analysis, whether it is CL, PL or EL is extremely poor. As we are discussing the CL coverage, I will concentrate on that.

I watched the analysis of the Liverpool game on youtube as someone on a uk lfc fanzine forum posted a link to it and it was the topic of much discussion. It saddens me to think that we have to give these morons some of our hard earned money by law. Surely the time has come for RTE to generate their own income. If tv3 can do then so should they.

Anyway the panels comments in relation to Gerrard are nothing short of insane. To refer to him as a nothing player is simply mind-boggling. By his own admission Gerrard is not having his best season but he worked his back side off on tues and gave evra and vidic alot of problems last saturday. (Btw I am no gerrard lover but I still admire him as a player.) Personally, I thought Ronaldinho was the biggest footballing flop our the 2 legs but the panel failed to pick up on that. (Trevor Steven is the only regular planel member who I have seen talk sense.)

Carra, what can I say, one our most consistent players over the past few seasons along with Stevie Finnan. I see a few bright sparks here think he is limited. Carra is a centre back, can someone please tell me how he is a limited? Is it his positioning, heading, passing, tackling? Please enlighten me?

On a side note, I would like to give a mention to the form of Stevie Finnan who has been excellent all season and has show in the last 2 games that he is a top class RB. Against man u he was up against giggs and had an excellent game against him. In the 2 games against Barca, he was up against, Eto, Ronaldinho & Messi and none of them got a kick. Also he is one of the few full backs in the PL at the moment who can pass and cross with both feet.

In a post riddled with nonsense I can't let this pass - RTÉ generates far more income from advertising than it does from the licence fee. All so that you can watch Champions League, Eircom League and Premiership football free-to-air.

I notice its only Liverpool fans defending Gerrard, and then some say that the attackers have an agenda?!

Anyway, I thought it was sad to see Arsenal go out last night as they play very attractive football. I'd much rather watch them in europe than a limited PSV outfit. I get the feeling thats not the way Billo meant it but who cares.

If that is the case, then it should be done away with as they clearly dont need it. I smell an RTE employee.

Also I dont think you are in a position to question the content of my posts. My education in football came from watching british clubs and players, not just Liverpool, which triumphed at the highest levels in club football. I think I know football!!

Also I can assure that this is one Liverpool fan who is not a fan of Steven Gerrard as a person but I respect him as a player.

    As you were!

Against who?? Chelsea, Barcelona, Villarreal, PSV??

More like Charlton, West Ham, and Reading, when winning. Sure, anyone can play attractive football then.

Bang on, having watched alot of Arsenal & been to see them on a number of occasions i have to say the style of football is fantastic to watch, doesnt always deliver results but to say they only play like that against the 'weaker' teams is nonsense, FFS its the ONLY way they know how to play, thats their biggest criticism, that they have no plan B!

Anyway, great thread, keep it going people!!

Personal I think Arsenal have played the best football of any team this decade. In full flow they could outplay Brazil, Barca, Man Utd, Argentina or whoever. As you say though DvB they don't have a plan B for when thats not working. Really hope Arsene Wenger gets his hands on the European Cup someday, what he has done for British football is vastly under-rated in my opinion, by the British media, probably because he is French

On the "we" debate vis a vis an English or foreign club, I agree. I never describe the beloved Wednesday as "we" because I am not a member of the club, I am not English and most people in Sheffield couldn't care less if Ireland was swamped by a sunami. I'll still support them though. The only ones I call "we" are Rovers and Ireland.

As for Arsenal playing the "best football" of the decade, if it was that great they would have won the CL at least once and the league title nearly every season. It might be attractive (the moans of Whinger apart) to watch but that doesn't make it the "best football". Also at their best, Barca's football would have been more attractive and more effective.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I didn't know (not that I use it) that use of a personal pronoun such as 'we' was country specific or country dependant.

I stupidly thought that it is used to refer to a group of people of which you are amongst. So perfectly suitable to describe support or following of Liverpool or Barcelona, Wayside Celtic, Armagh u-15s, Colo Colo, Boca Juniors, Manchester United, Orlando Pirates etc.

Do you see my point yet? I'm sure you do at this stage, but you'll carry on regardless, no doubt.

    The Model Club

Tell all the Bohs you know
that we've gone and won two-in-a-row
and it's not gonna be three
and it's not gonna be four
it's more likely to be 5-1.

What about man u of the early to mid nineties? they played some fantastic football that was very effective in winning trophies.
