Think I read somewhere that both Rigneys and Gibson had signed on for this season. Haven't a clue about Walsh and Lee.

Well both Rigneys and Gibson played last season for County (from the U-21s aren't they?) and put in good performances.......

The other two i dunno. Walsh looks like a tricky player but thats all I could say after the one game. Did Lee even play Saturday.

haven't a clue I think someone said Philly Gorman was but no word on Bowers. He's on the team sheet so I assume he is.

Who is Cathal Brady he's not on the team sheet?

Ian Malone has not yet recovered from ankle and knee problems and he has not been able to train. His condition is being kept under review.

Posted this match report on the Ultras forum; thought some of you folks might fancy a read;

Kildare County 1 [McCrossan, 35]
Shamrock Rovers 3 [Kelliher 14; Duffy 31; Colbert 55]

Both of these sides were making their seasonal debuts, and the less than frenetic pace of the game suggested as much. The game began with the visitors on the offensive, some good work down the right hand side producing a corner. It resulted in another one, which was cleared to safety.

After only three minutes the match ball showed a distinct lack of fitness, and it was withdrawn for treatment. Rovers were looking menacing, and Kildare were stretched to contain them. But the home side did manage to win a free in the right corner; a decent delivery produced a defensive header from David Cassidy which saw the ball fly over his own bar; it was close enough to draw a gasp from the couple of hundred who were in attendance.

A couple of minutes later the Hoops midfielder posed a threat in the opposition box when just failing to connect with a throw–in. County struggled to clear the resultant corner; Buzzer Rowe’s close range header was clawed away by new signing, Austin O’Neill in the home nets. There was a goal in the offing.

Just before the quarter hour mark David McGill cut inside Sean L’Estrange and before the onrushing cover could get to him he fired off a shot which O’Neill could only parry. Robbie Kelliher was on hand to score on his debut for Rovers. Three minutes after, the striker failed to capitalise following intuitive interplay between himself and Rowe; bearing down on goal, Kelliher seemed to lose control of the ball and the opportunity was lost.

The stadium announcer reminded us that he was behind the microphone yet again; constantly interrupting the action to share information which could have waited until half time.

John Ryan’s side were finding last season’s meanest defence in their usual form. Aidan Price was mercurial; the young central defender was being given too much time by his opponents. Tommy Barrett was elegant in midfield and McGill was forcing L’Estrange into some rash challenges. It seemed only a matter of time before the 1st Division Champions would increase their lead. Padraig Almond, on loan from Rovers to Kildare for 2007, managed to slip in behind the Hoops backline on a couple of occasions. That was as nervy as it got for the Premier side.

Just over half an hour had elapsed when the busy Kelliher again stretched the Thoroughbreds defence; this time the ex-Limerick player dwelt just too long and the ball was smuggled away for a corner. Again the smaller County side struggled to clear their lines. A scramble ensued and Jamie Duffy scuffed the ball goalwards while lying on the ground. It was hoofed clear, but the well-placed referee signalled a goal. Game over.

The Thoroughbreds won a free kick well inside their own territory. One of those hit and hope free kicks was delivered. While the visitors relaxed the ball dropped to the right boot of Steve McCrossan, all of 25 yards out. His textbook strike merited a goal and it scythed beyond the fruitless dive of John McGuinness. With ten minutes to go until halftime, the hosts were back in with a shout.

The slumbering Hoops leapt back into action; Ryan Casey delivered a dangerous free kick low across the face of O’Neill’s goal; Barrett will still be wondering how he didn’t do it justice. Moments after Barrett, Rowe and Kelliher combined well. The latter powered an effort straight at the only man in the ground with warm hands.

The half ended as it had begun, with Kildare winning two corners in quick succession.

When the sides emerged for the second period, Sven-like substitutions had taken place in the Rovers’ ranks. No less than six new faces were introduced, along with a couple of changes in the Kildare line-up. Those who feared a farcical second half were not far wrong.

It began well enough, with Pat Scully’s side immediately picking up the reins. Cassidy met a corner with a powerful effort, which was parried by O’Neill and hacked away without pomp or ceremony by the besieged Kildare defence. On 53 minutes the ‘keeper saved well yet again; this time Casey’s fine effort was thwarted.

When Wayne Colbert collected a through ball and confidently rounded the ‘keeper to make it 3-1 after 55 minutes, a rout seemed to be on the cards. Unfortunately for the neutral, the staccato style of the stadium announcer permeated the match. Substitution followed substitution; the midfield battle prevailed, with little pattern to the game. Danny O’Connor stood out; the former Longford Town man was in the thick of the action on his debut for the Dublin side.

The Premier side were no longer imposing themselves on the game, although they continued to create the better opportunities. Colbert struck the base of the post from 20 yards as O’Neill looked on; Andy Myler should have done better when he scuffed his attempt from all of 8 yards. The most direct forward movement of the second half came from the Thoroughbreds’ physio, who impressed hugely with his 50-metre sprint into the playing area.

The game tapered off as the light faded. Pat Scully will be happy with what he saw; maybe one or two more players with top-level experience are necessary to pad out his young squad. Kildare never gave up the fight; but they never appeared to believe they could take anything from this game. Maybe they had Monday’s match on their minds; or next Saturday’s – the announcer certainly had.
