Houghton was on the brink of taking over, but negotiations regarding bonus payments fell through, scuppering the deal.

Somehow, I don't think we'll be hearing from the morality brigade who were calling Robbie Keane a greedy prīck when his Birmingham move fell through.

Big difference. Hughton has the next twenty years to be a manager. Robbie has perhaps three or four years left as a top level footballer, probably less.

Was talk about him linking up with Martin Jol at Fulham (He's worked with him previously) but its now likely (or perhaps even confirmed) that Jol is bringing his Number Two with him.

it looks like the possible "problem" i identified last December has become a reality.

In fact, does anyone else feel that Hughton might be caught in a strange position that despite what he has done with Newcastle, he has not yet really proved himself over a long time and, as such, a lot of the better teams in the Premiership wouldnt risk taking a punt on him yet?

Given his relatively short managerial career I think upper-level Championship/lower level Premiership should be the target. May have to settle for mid-championship ultimately though.

Update on the vacant job at Birmingham. Would be a good opportunity for him!

    Looks good:

Skysports.com understands Chris Hughton has won the race to be Birmingham's new manager and should put pen to paper on Wednesday.

Hughton is close to tying up a deal to become Alex McLeish's replacement at St Andrews with terms close to being agreed on a 12-month rolling contract.

He won't know himself. A club which seems to be pretty harmonious and with some money to spend, how will he cope!

He will have to rebuild almost a new team as Birmingham are looking to sell their best players and releasing a lot of players as well. A real challenge but one I expect him to win ie get Birmingham back into the Premiership in one season. Very under rated manager IMO.

Cant wait to see how he does, would love to see him pass Newcastle on his way up in a seasons time. With Leon Best on board as the Championships top marksman.

Strangely enough Crafty it wasn't really Hughton who gave Best much of a chance. Pardew was the one to really give Best a go.

Seems a weird decision on Newcastle's part to want to part ways with Best though...he's got a lot of promise. Not many young players get a hat-trick like that so soon after making their PL debut.

Best made his Premier League debut years ago when he was with Southampton.

Yes, but I think it was Hughton who brought him to Newcastle, but I could be wrong, also I suppose Andy Carrol was tough to drop. I was surprised they are happy for him to leave though, he was a bright spot in their season before the injury.

Yeah, Best was unlucky enough to join the squad when the likes of Carroll and Lovenkrands were scoring for fun. He clearly showed once fit that he's a Premier League striker (and a prolific one at that) so it's surprising Pardew doesn't want him. Maybe there are doubts about his attitude.

Should be good having Hughton at Birmingham. With Foster probably on his way to Villa, Colin Doyle will have an opportunity to stake his claim (he already won promotion as #1 once) and Keith Fahey will be one of the senior members of the midfield next season, along with Carr at the back.
