Yes, for those of you too young to remember Jim as anything other than George Hamilton's trusty sidekick, he scored his first goal for Liverpool in the European Cup semi-final against Panathanaikos in 1985. A towering header if I recall correctly.

Just a couple of years earlier he had won the league with Shamrock Rovers. He was a really good prospect for us and unfortunately had his career cut short by a bad injury.

not only did he take it well, but showed good anticipation moving out to the back post position before it fell to him.

re: france 04 that was a harder chance imo, and i've been slagged for giving oshea stick on here before, but i wouldn't slag him for that miss.

without looking for it on youtube I'll agree it came at him quicker but if anything he was closer in to the back post and deadball line. He just got right under it.

Barthez was nowhere for it though -Almunia was on his feet for O'Sheas shot last night. I thought he hit it very well too ...and, through gritted teeth, I congratulate him for it.

Keane also scored in the Semi Final against Bayer Leverkusen in 2002. It wasn't enough though as United went out on away goals.

my memory of that night is hazy...good few beers and we were on the very back row behind the goal, but i think o'shea was further out, and didn't he pull it wide, not put it over?

    Paris

He hit it right in the meat, right footed and it flew past the post, curling back in all the time. If he'd been a few yards further out it was a goal.

I reckon he only missed by a few feet and in O'Shea's favour, he had only a fraction to react, the ball came at him really quickly. It could just as easily have gone in. Barthez was rooted.

Thought it was a bad miss myself, he had plenty of space and could have picked his spot, thought he paniced and pulled on it, had he connected like he did last night he'd have scored.

Apart from Keane and Beglin the legendary Stevie Heighway also scored in the semi-final for Liverpool in 1977.

eh... maybe thats down to osheas performance?
Nasri played in the centre. I think it was Diabi on the left to help out Gibbs against Ronaldo.

It was a great goal in itself but more importantly it was what the goal and performance then led to, a further two goals and a final spot. Similar to Gerard in 05 against Milan I suppose......

geysir - synic till the end!!

Gerrard against Milan still rankles with me. Smicer, Hamann & Alonso were all superb. Look at Milan's 3rd goal and how it came about - Gerrard playing a simple pass straight to a Milan defender. OK, gotta admit I really don't like him & my judgment is probably clouded.

Yeah Gerrard that night was one of the reasons thy were 3 nil down. Hamman coming on changed the game not Gerrard. To be fair to him he has been played out of position many times, as in people have played him in central midfield in a two. He thinks or at least thought this was his best position but it never has or never will be his best position. Liverpool have found his best position this season, and his other great season was the season before last when he played right side of midfield

I have read numerous posts on how Gerards performance was 'not all that' and how he was at fault for a Milan goal or two. Ive never seen the game since the night it was on TV and I cant really recall the specifics but I dont think anyone can really dispute that his goal was the catalyst for the comeback. Perhaps it was the tactical genius of bringing Hamman in to the game or Alonso or any other reason, but the goal is what really kick started it (IMO).

Anyway back on topic.....O'Shea for a Final goal anyone?

Didn't Smicer get the first goal?

No Stevie G's header was first, followed closely by the Smicer/Dida goal-whoever you deem more responsible for it and finally Alonso's rebound penalty.

I did think about that when I was writing my post but thought no, you're taking that too far
