    Sicilian Derby

Just saw on Sky Sports News:

    "All Italian football suspended indefinitely after policeman killed during violence at tonight's Sicilian Derby" {That's Palermo v Catania i think}

Could be some serious reprecussions for the clubs involved.

Here's the link to story on Sky Sports

That's just shameful; can't say I disagree with the move to suspend playing until this is worked out. (And just to confirm, it was Palermo and Catania.)

Another sad day for Italian football after the death of Emmano Licursi last week in an amateur game. He was beaten to death. Incidentally there was a minute's silence for him before the game.

Many reports say the trouble started when Palermo fans weren't allowed in until half-time. They then clashed with Catania fans and the police threw tear gas which spilled onto the pitch and stopped the game for half an hour.

The police officer was killed by a homemade explosive thrown into his jeep. All professional games have been cancelled indefintitely. Catania chairman Antonino Pulvirenti has said he will leave football now after this.

As a keen admier and follower of Italian football, I'm not surprised by this incident, you may recall the Champions Legaue match between Inter and AC and the Roma derby trouble in recent years, but this is a shocking occurence. When football takes the life of law enforcers, it's clear it's gone too far.

It was going to be a big weekend for Italy. The Sicilian derby, Inter and Roma in what's been called the title decider. All insignificant now.

Italian football is falling further into disrepute.

Wasn't there a similar level of putrage when Inter fans *took the CL derby game into their own hands* a couple of years ago...and what came of that?

that we've gone and won two-in-a-row
and it's not gonna be three
and it's not gonna be four
it's more likely to be 5-1.

shocking stuff. why not just a points deduction to the Sicilian teams? No wonder Bravo pulled the plug on showing Serie A over here.

That was a setanta decision as they only "loaned" the coverage to bravo.

Looks like the police made a balls of it tbh. Not excusing/justifying anything

this tragedy has been waiting to happen ... and it appears - no expert here - that the powers that be have done practically nothing to tackle it.

sounds like the "english disease" has taken hold of italy

You're giving the English too much credit, its been going on in Italy for the same time, and afar more hardcore too...
