    WILLIE DO THE JOB?
    Tuesday, 30 January 2007
As the new FAI eircom League season fast approaches, Monaghan United FC have been busily working on signing some new players to bolster the players who have re-signed for another year at Century Homes Park. The first of these signings are Willie Doyle and Aaron Moooney who both come to Monaghan United from Kilkenny City. Barry Burke and local lads Paul Whelan and Paul Smyth are among the players who have pledged another season to the club.

    WILLIE DOYLE
Centre Forward Willie Doyle lists Premier Teams Bohemians, UCD and Shamrock Rovers among his former clubs and has been a much sought after player by many clubs during the close season. Willie has an eircom Premier League Winners Medal and an eircom League First Division Runners up medal already in the trophy cabinet but he is ambitious to add to that tally. Willie has picked up caps representing the Irish Schools at U18 level and Ireland U19 levels. Monaghan United bring the talented 23 year old to the club with the hope that he will rack up some goals for the club.

    AARON MOONEY
Former Bohs and Kilkenny City player Aaron Mooney was one of Kilkenny’s shining lights in their otherwise poor season last year. The Centre Half states that he wishes to play in the Premier Division again and will do all in his power to help propel Monaghan United in that direction. The 25 year old scored against Monaghan last season and is now looking forward to pushing for points with the Mons. Mooney has also won honours with the Irish Schools setup.

    BARRY BURKE

Last season’s Player of the Year and Supporters Club Player of the Year, Barry is a popular re-signing. Barry is the king of midfield and is very encouraging towards his team mates throughout games. His previous clubs include the now defunct Dublin City, whom he won promotion with, Shelbourne and Kildare County. A hard worker and top class motivator, Barry is the lynch pin of the team and it is with a sigh of relief that many fans will greet his decision to stay at the Mons for another season.

    PAUL WHELAN
“Wheelo” has long been popular with the fans and despite many top clubs, including some Premier Division teams, looking to sign this talented 19 year old, Paul decided to stick with his home town club for another season. Paul has racked up International experience as part of the Republic of Ireland U19 Homebase squad who played against the Republic of Ireland Senior team in their warm up games, and is a consistent member of the Irish Colleges squad who have played in the USA. Paul has come to the attention of many clubs due to his outstanding performances for Monaghan United’s Senior and U21 teams, with last year’s runners up position in the Foyle Cup being a highlight of his season.

More information on signings will be released in the coming days. Keep an eye on www.monaghanunited.ie and press for details

Further to Tuesday’s release of details on the Monaghan United FC Squad for 2007, the Mons confirm that they have secured the signature of former Kilkenny City and St Pat’s player Peter D’Arcy. D’Arcy will be joining ex team mates Willie Doyle & Aaron Mooney at the club. United also confirmed that Finbar Heffernan, Ciaran Friel, Robbie Farrell and Tommy Toal will be staying at United.

    PETER D’ARCY
Twenty-one year old Peter D’Arcy is another signing from Kilkenny City. His experience previous to that was with St Patrick’s Athletic. Peter is a determined young midfielder who has plenty of experience despite his youth. It will be hoped that he will add some depth to the midfield for the Mons this year.

    FINBAR HEFFERNAN
Under 21’s and Senior Team regular from last year, Monaghan town lad Finbar Heffernan will be hoping to make the centre midfield position his this season. Another 21 year old with an eye to the future, Finbar has been training hard and will be hoping to impress Mick Cooke & the fans with his skill and speed. Previously with Northern team Dungannon Swifts, Finbar also had trials at Sunderland but is proud to pull on the Mons jersey for another season, having turned down an offer from Armagh.

    CIARAN FRIEL
Former Lifford Celtic and Irish Defence Forces centre half, Ciaran Friel, had a very successful year with the Mons U21’s last year. This solid footballer proved his worth many times and as a result was awarded an Irish Nationwide Under 21 Player of the Month award. The kind of guy every team needs when things are going against you, Ciaran is a great motivator and shows his true strength when under pressure. Limavady United were keen on his signature, but luckily Ciaran has decided to stay at United.

    ROBBIE FARRELL
Robbie came to United at the mid-season transfer window in July from Glenavon, having previously spent time at Dublin City, Longford Town and Newry City. Robbie’s level headed maturity up front won him many fans in the latter part of last season and it is hopped that when he teams up with Willie Doyle, the goals will come thick and fast. His reputation had preceeded him and Robbie will be determined to live up to this. A cousin of one of Monaghan’s most popular players in recent times, Graham Doyle, Farrell has the potential to become another United Legend.

    TOMMY TOAL
A totally committed young player who made 10 first team appearances last season, Tommy will be hoping to add to this tally. Tommy came up through the ranks at Monaghan United from Juvenile level and is an important member of the Under 21’s as well as completing his Senior team duties. A popular local lad with a talent for coaching also, Tommy is a much valued player at Monaghan United.

Further squad announcements will be made in the coming days.

    COOKE ADDS TO SQUAD
Monaghan United Manager Mick Cooke has added further to his squad by bringing in Kevin Williamson and Ian McCluskey.

    KEVIN WILLIAMSON
County Offaly man Williamson, has previously played with Bohemians Under 21’s, Galway United and Dublin City but comes to Monaghan from Athlone Town. This left sided midfielder is equally comfortable at left back and will bring with him a wealth of experience gleaned in the Premier Division with Dublin City and Bohemians.

    IAN McCLUSKEY
Straight from the Shelbourne Youth set up, Ian is a bit of an unknown quantity as yet. That said, if pre-season training so far is anything to go by, this 20 year old will be snapping at the heels of the Senior team regulars looking for his place on the right wing or as a centre forward.
