    Matthews for Shels?

    From the Irish Independent:
CARETAKER Shelbourne chairman Finbarr Flood was coming to terms yesterday with the scale of the task ahead of him in attempting to get the crisis club back on a solid footing.

With Ollie Byrne facing a prolonged spell out of the game due to ill health, Flood has agreed to step in on a temporary basis until the chief executive is able to resume his duties.

He accepted the invitation of the club's management committee after Wednesday night's meeting which ran into the early hours, and spent yesterday meeting with players and staff to ascertain the seriousness of the current situation.

As only a handful of contracted players are remaining - and all have offers from other clubs - Flood is attempting to put a structure in place to keep them at Tolka Park next season.

And the first concern is to appoint a new manager to rally the troops and begin preparations for the Setanta Cup opener against Portadown on February 26.

While Byrne said last week that Stephen Geoghegan would be taking the position, the situation has changed with Flood now having the authority to appoint a new boss with Longford manager Alan Mathews reportedly back in the frame.

"The immediate priority is getting a manager in to look after things on the football side so we can concentrate on the off the pitch side of things," said Flood yesterday.

    Ambitions

"A lot of people would want to manage Shelbourne. I would have thought it would have been on the list of most managers' ambitions. We hope to have one appointed in the next 48 hours.

"There's no doubting that things are bad and that we're at a very low ebb. What we're doing now is to try and get things up and running. Time isn't on our side, with the Setanta Cup being only around the corner."

according to a reliable source Matthews doesnt want to go to Shels. He reckons they are in a far worse situation than us. Mind you with Finbarr Flood it could be different. All we can do is wait and see.
Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

Somebody told me he had a full time job as a bank manager? Is this true? If so, what bank would let a manager be a EL Manager?

He's actually a regional manager or based in their Head Office. Higher up the organisation than a Branch Manager any road. To be fair, he seems to be pretty able to seperate the two jobs, given how obvious our budget the last few seasons hasn't been sustainable. His job is the reason he's had no interest in going full time with the bigger clubs that have come sniffing in the past, however, I doubt that'll be a problem with shels this season.

First Active I believe. Nobody at Longford has heard anything from him to say that he's going. Seems to be an awful lot of people convinced that he is though

As I said nobody in Longford being his current employers has been told.

We were told Pete Mahon and Stephen Geoghegan were definitely appointed before.

Given today's new revelations, I'd be surprised tbh. This could be the third time a leak of the Shels situation has halted a managerial appointment - shame

Having said that Finbarr Flood has a lot more credibility than Ollie ever could...

10million yo-yos in debt. Can you really see Mathews jumping ship to a club with no players and no management! as bad a state we are at the mo, it cant compare to Shels plight!

It would be a quick turn around from the position he took Sunday evening while interviewed by shannonside. He didn't actually out and say that there was no way he'd take the job, but he did question why Stephen Geoghegan would want to.
That said, Tony didn't hit him with the real question.
