    gloves

I've been going to LOI games since November 1969 (Hibs beat Celtic 1-0, Wiggy got the winner and Ludzic on his debut saved a penalty from the Dav) however I saw something the other night which I haven't seen before at a Cork venue. Georgie and Flynnie were wearing gloves. Can any of the older posters on this board ever remember Cork players wearing gloves at home games????

BTW I'm not slagging them or anything is just that I hadn't seen it before in the Cross or the Lodge.

Yeah, the old timers were actually notorious for this. Here are the best remembered occasions:

    (1) Johnny Paton 22 Jan 1934 Cork FC v Shelbourne

    (2) Mick 'Slap' O'Keeffe (senior) 16 Feb 1958 Evergreen United v Drumcondra

    (3) Richie 'Chopper' Brookes 29 Dec 1973 Cork Celtic v Limerick

    (4) Brohan, Sheehan, O'Mahony and Herrick (a famous collective display of softiness) New Year's Day 1974 Cork Hibs v Waterford

Hope this is of some assistance. On a curious note, though it may be of interest to you, Cork goalkeepers through the generations have been seen wearing gloves...

Donie Forde you must have been a Cork Celtic fan in a past life. You nearly had me going until you mentioned the famous Hibs backline wearing gloves whatever about Richie Brooks
Now I know Noel O'Mahoney wore mountain boots but gloves. Ask Paddy Short didn't Noel walk up his back at the Cross in 1973?
As for the goalies Joe Grady never needed gloves! Ludzic or one the Celtic softies must have introduced them

AFAIK it was from his gentle approach to the game in an era when men were men and bucket seats were for milking cows...
