    Cork to Dublin

    Folks,

Just wondering if there are any companies who provide transport from Cork to Dublin on a Saturday night. Bus Eireann and Iarnrodeireann both have services that stop around 8.00pm and I'd be looking for something for 10ish...

    Any help greatly appreciated

Try flying with Aer Arann www.aerarann.com

If you book well in advance, you can get it at a good price.

I was going to suggest AirCoach but last bus leaves at 7pm. Last Ryanair flights is at 8pm.

    Exactly, Neil.
How much of a demand is there for people to travel from Cork to Dublin, after 2200? Not enough for there to be a regular public or private service, obviously.
Get yourself a cheap hostel and travel up early in the morning or hitch a lift.

Its ridiculous that public transport stops at 8pm between the two cities. In this day and age services should run until 10pm especially with the amount of people travelling foreigners or otherwise. Guarantee if there was a service that late it would be used.

Aercoach is a superb service though considering the rip off that is the train.

I'm a big fan of public transport and generally speaking Irish public transport is fine compared to others I've used (proce, times, reliability.

The service after 6 o'clock though is disgraceful

The people working in Public transport do a pretty good job considering how underfunded they are compared to in other countries.

Huh? Like the train drivers going on strike because they were being forced to drive spanking new posh trains and thought they should be compensated, by getting a wage hike?

Don't believe everything you read in the Irish Independant. There was far more to that dispute than that. There is a concerted effort to discredit public transport in this country so people will agree to privatising it.

Take of the red-tinted glasses off for a minute. All 3 public transport companies get massive subventions despite having very little or no competiton and are run for the benefit of the staff and not the travelling public.

The much vaunted Transport 21 actually ignored private operators in favour of the 3 failed companies we have currently. Give us competition and choice otherwise things will never improve.

Its not too difficult because the train driver unions are more or less hated by the general public - 2 guys go on strike & shutdown half the rail network.

Thats sKcollob. C.I.E. subsidies are the lowest in Europe and that includes subsidies given to PRIVATISED firms abroad.
The rest of your statement is so ridiculous I'm not even going to bother replying unless you back it up.
As for you Pete, glad to see you are keeping up your role as tribune of the people! Peoples' republic of Cork my @r$€

The Unions can hold the country to ransome because we've only got one train company. It's as simple as that!

    When did they do this?
They should have gone on strike in 2004 (day after paddy's day) but they pulled out on the basis of "a letter from Bertie" that made all sorts of vague promises that never came to anything.
If they are privatised they face the type of working conditions people working for Connex and Aircoach have to put up with. They would be right to resist that with all their might. Look at the uncertain future now faced by Aerlingus staff.

What do you want me to do about it?
Pay more money to compensate for the mismanagement of these companies?
If I carried out my duties in a manner as inefficient as those in the Public Sector, I'd be out of a job. Would anyone feel sorry for me? Of course they wouldn't. They'd just say that I was useless.
Unlike Benchmarking and other such nonsense, I actually have targets to reach and deadlines to meet before I'll earn greater financial reward.

As I said, they are under-subsidised. LUAS just increased their peak-time prices. Who runs that?

As someone who works in the public sector I take great offence at your private sector chauvinism.

Where as we have targets and reach deadlines for no extra reward. FU.

There was a time when public service unions could hold the country to randsom & get public support. Those days are gone now & even the Nurses got very little support in their strike a few years ago. If sympathetic workers like the Nurses can't get any public support people like the Rail workers will get none. No one in the private sector could strike because they provided with improved conditions & equipment. Does anyone remember the break away rail workers union for 8-10 years go - the crowd with wildcat strikes...?
