Two Albums I bought this weekend - Public Image Ltd. (First Edition)

The 3 Jimi Hendrix Experience Albums - Are you Experienced, Axis Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland. Missed them out originally due to not being born. Genius.

The Beatles - Revolver to Abbey Rd. Quality.

Neil Young - "After the Goldrush" and "Harvest". "Old Man" is a very striking, moving tune.

The La's - The La's. Bought this album twice. First time around - wasn't into it. Second time around - loved it big time.

Lee Mavers (lead singer, The La's) once described this album as "Cheesy ****e". Hyper critical if you ask me. Heavily influenced Noel Gallagher et all.

Well, I'm not in a total minority who rate the album.

Magazine polls can be taken with a pinch of salt but........Q Magazine (No 235, Feb 06) listed it at No 28 in its 100 greatest Albums of All Time.

Lydon didn't even rate it himself at the time. Its a good album, not a great album.
PIL is better.

In fairness Q magizine is so far up its own hole that all music is but a distant, muffled sound to its reviewers

Heart of Gold is a quality tune alright. Identify with parts of the Old Man lyrics and I think that's why its a favourite. (End of Oprah moment)

"Southern Man" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" off of After the Goldrush are great tunes as well.

young's 'on the beach' from 1974 is amazing, tunes like 'walk on' 'for the turnstiles' 'revolution blues' and 'motion pictures'... whole album's amazing. i think members of the Band (danko and von helm?) played on a few of the songs. definitely shows. it was only released on cd a few years ago with 3 other albums (american stars and bars also v. good). apparently young had a problem with the fidelity of digital music vs. vinyl.

A good Neil Young story - There was one stage where Geffen records, having signed Young, were contemplating suing Neil Young for "not being Neil Young enough" following a series of "challenging" albums.

yea i think it was his electronic record "Trans" in the mid 80s that was the proverbial camel's back-breaking straw. i'd love to hear that thing!

You're missing out "Rubber Soul" by doing that!

Lydon quotes can't be trusted. Depending on who he's talking to, or what mood he's in, he expresses contradictory opinions on the same topics. Just take a look at his autobiography.

I like (early) PIL, but it doesn't come close to Never Mind the ********.

Agreed. For an obviously intelligent man he's prone to bluster and fudge and has more than once spouted the same type of "history of punk-rock as brought to you by SkyOne" sentiment that inspired many an ill-advised Sandi Thom lyric.

PIL I like some of their singles, ( especially the original version of This Is Not a Love Song) some of the first album is unlistenable as are parts of Metal BOX. Other singles I like are Public Image ( which John had intended as lyrics for a song on a potential second Pistols album had the split not occurred) and Rise ( which lyrically reflects the old Irish proverb " May The Road Rise with you and may the sun be always on your back") John's parents were Irish hence the connection.
