Northern Lights is a classic alright. For the Pixies I don't think you can look any further than "Debaser". Try a couple of these :

Obscurity Knocks - Trash Can Sinatras
Twilight Campfighter - Guided By Voices
Heavy Heart - You Am I
    Going Places - Teenage Fanclub
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

I would rate "Monkey Gone to Heaven" just as highly as Debaser too

Yeah - most of their stuff was brilliant - original, intelligence, wit and from the gut.

Kurt Cobain has been oft quoted as saying that the Pixies heavily influenced the sound of Nevermind.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a rip off of "U Mass" from the Pixies album "Trompe le Monde".

The bit where Black Francis sings "Its Ed-u-cational" are the now famous chords to Smells like Teen Spirit.

Now where did I leave that Anorak......................

Wolfie I believe you are wrong there , whilst SLTS in undoubtely indebted to Pixies , Kurt himself admitted as much , I dont think the song U-Mass itself can be seen to being a direct influence , as it was released in October 1991 a month after Nevermind and a year after SMTS was first written , Better examples of songs that influenced it by Pixies would be Tame , Dead , Gouge Away , Broken Face

Yeah, have to hold the hand up on that one, Gustavo!!

The time frames don't add up alright. There's an uncanny resemblance in the Chord progression though.

    Give us back that Anorak!!!!!!!

Wolfie, you have fallen in love a lot!

    was it not reciprocated?!?!

btw all those songs are peoples favourites. i thought this title was about falling in love to a song so it would have to relate to something/someone!!

wolfie sounds like a serial monogamist above or possibly a serial cheater!!!

well i intended people to have maybe 1 or 2 songs only...

its much more than your favourite songs...

the song has to sound perfect to you
    not anyone else

There are a couple of songs that captured how I was feeling at a particular point in time and as a result I never tire of hearing them.

For a friend - the Communards

A friend of mine had just passed away and this song captured my feelings to a tee - every time I hear it brings tears and joy as it reminds me of our friendship.

    Perfect Day - Lou Reed

Timeless classic, the first song I danced to with my wife

Going home (from the film Local Hero) - Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits

    Absolutely brilliant piece of music
    Smile........ it confuses people

Class song -sadly I can echo your sentiment for an all too similar a reason.

Taillights Fade by Buffalo Tom is another that brings me right back to a place ...two places actually. When I first heard the single life couldn't have been better ...by the time I got the LP things had gone completely tits up.

Sometimes I'm not sure if these things actually help you through or do they just make you maudlin and indulgent -but you'd still not be without them all the same.

I did like that when it came out, but now I really sick of it. Probably because it was completely played out. I feel the same about most Killers songs now, except for "All these things I've done"

I went to see Buffalo Tom in Dublin(In the Tivoli I think) the night it was announced that Kurt Cobain had been found dead. They started with Tailights Fade as a Tribute to him, which I thought was pretty much perfect.

BTW can't believe I omitted "I Am The Cosmos" by Big Star from my previous list. Not particularly a Big Star fan, but that song is a stone cold classic. If you've never heard it, do yourself a favour and seek it out.

Hello Again by Tommy Bolin ( Deep Purple 1975-76) from his second solo Album "Private Eyes" . Beautiful song.
