I can't see it at present, to be honest. Look at the list of players who have left the league at the moment - Seán Dillon from Shels, Danny Murphy from Cork, Trevor Molloy and Paul Keegan from Pat's, Pat Kavanagh from UCD, David Forde from Derry, Dean Fitzgerald (Longford), and that's before you look at the likes of Gary Dicker, Darren Quigley, a fair chunk of what's left at Shels, those players (Stephen O'Brien, Jim Crawford, Vinny Arkins, etc) who have retired and of course Stephen Kenny as a manager. From the transfers thread, we've only got Brian Murphy, Mikko Vilmunen coming into the league from outside, as well then as youth players. So overall, I would say more quality has left the league than has joined it at present, which would point to a decreased quality next season. But not enough to have Shels anywhere near challenging for the title, with another player gone today.

Pat's will be improved, for example, but only because they're taking from Shels, so overall, there's no change for the league.

Crawford more than likely going to Rovers AFAIK.

And of those players mentioned only Dillon could be considered top class. I'd be fairly certain the others could be replaced easily enough

Thought I'd heard it; maybe I'm wrong. Apologies so, though it doesn't change my point

Could be replaced, but haven't yet. Which is kind of the point. Anything could happen.

I'm not saying the quality will decline because Shels are in decline. I actually think the quality of football was better when Cork won the League the year before. Then we had two or three teams playing football. If (when?) Shels goalscoring dries up this year, I think we could expect a lot of low-quality goalless draws and 1-0 wins. Too many teams seem to feel, and God knows perhaps they are right, that their only chance of success is by boring and frustrating the other team, a sort of a football rope-a-dope.

Well if Shels go belly up there will only be four teams in Dublin, Bohs, Pats. UCD and Rovers.

Here's how Ladbrokes see things. From p 281 of Aertel -

    2 Shelbourne
    10/3 Cork City
    5/2 Derry City
    5 Drogheda Utd
    10 Bohemians
    10 Shamrock Rvs
    25 Sligo Rovers
    28 Galway Utd
    28 St Patricks Ath
    40 Longford Town
    50 UCD
    100 Bray Wanderers

The fact that they have Shels as favourites and, to a lesser extent, us to finish second last tells me they haven't a clue really. Some good value there, especially on Derry and Drogheda. Evens on Drogs to finish top three is free money, I think.

If they believe Shels are the favourites for the league then what odds would you get on them getting relegated?

I'd be more worried about Rover's and Galway's odds.

Pats each way looks like a great bet.

That's more like it, although Shels are still far too high up.

You can't get odds on relegation.
