You're right, but it's very unlikely to be that much. A mile or two at most. (Sorry for pedantry!)

Anyone know how long it takes to get fine in the post?
Weeks or even months I'm afraid.

Typical anyway, drive 500mph up & down the country & only speed trap is on the motorway.
They were very specifically told to stop that by the Minister; assuming it was on a straight. Next time you see that, slow down, get the reg and report them. It's the only way to get them to stop; assuming enough people do it that is.

I got done doing 36mph in a 30 zone (was still mph back then) on the way into Ballinalack in Longford(I think). ****es me off that there certain spots where the speed limit is unusually low and thats where they try and get people. More of a money making excercise than trying to save lives. Got the points nearly 3 years ago so they'll be gone from my license soon.

I think that was politics by the Minister. I don't believe he cares as longs as the revenue comes in. Sure the policy leaflet the Gardai sent out to homes a few months ago had as its cover picture a Garda bike with radar gun on the side of a motorway.

Think the gaurds have certain targets to meet each month so they will pull you over sometimes if yer only doing slightly over the speed limit.

I honestly think that's quite unlikely. If it happened to me, I'd challenge the ticket and take my chances in court on the grounds of speedo and/or detector calibration. If it got that far - ie. the Garda actually turned up in court - there's a fair chance the judge would throw it out anyway, for wasting his time. I've seen it happen, and the Garda got a right boll0cking from the judge into the bargain.

I just got a letter from the DOE taking two back, just in time for my insurance quote, which appears to knock about a hundred quid off! Yahoo!

Anybody know how many points you require before it effects your insurance premium or do the Insurance companies differ?

True, but you have to go to court to challenge it. Calibration certs should be issued when this is done.

They differ, but it seems quite common to give you a "bonus" if you have 0 points, take it away if you have 2, and start totting up after that. But basically if you have any points, you're quite likely to feel it in your wallet.

    If in doubt, ask.

    New penalty point offences due

Three of the new offences carry a sanction of five points, including failing to have an NCT up to date, an offence for which there is currently a fine of €1,500.

Vehicles of four years and older must undergo an NCT test every two years.

Driving a dangerously defective vehicle or driving without a certificate of road worthiness will also incur five penalty points.

There will be a three-point penalty for driving a vehicle without fixing a fault uncovered at the NCT or for drivers of trucks that strike an overhead bridge.

The NCT one seems a bit harsh.

    100 KPH??

Does anyone have an idea what speed they'll do you for if using a speed camera?!...... i don't go over 70 mph(110 kph?) but just find 100 too slow if i've a clear road ahead, while i've never heard anything on it, i assume that there generally just looking for people who take the ****(70mph+) and wouldn't pull you for slightly over?
There's the right way, the wrong way.... and the Max Power way!! :-D

Just another way for the state to bring in more money. Always the motorist that has to pay when they need a few quid

I've heard that from a few Irish people. Any source? I know that here in the US (or parts of it anyway), it's law that the speedometer be calibrated to at least 5% accuracy - that could be either way.

I don't like the idea of giving someone penalty points a non-driving reason, like for the NCT being out of date. Fine them sure; heck, impound the car if you want to be stupidly draconian, but penalty points? It undermines their purpose.
