Mathews future in peril
December 13, 2006
Alan Mathews’s future at Longford Town appears to be under doubt after two more departures from his squad at Flancare Park in recent days.
Midfield duo Alan Kirby and Dean Fitzgerald have joined St Patrick’s Athletic and Glentoran respectively.
They follow Danny O’Connor (Shamrock Rovers), Stephen Gough and Gary Cronin (both Bray Wanderers) out of the midlanders’ squad since the end of the eircom League season last month.
Mathews is unhappy with the situation, which will force him to rebuild his squad for the second successive season – if he chooses to stay at the club.
A former assistant manager of Shelbourne, the 41-year-old Dubliner is regarded as the favourite to replace Pat Fenlon as Shels boss this winter.
what do ye think of this? matthews is in talks with jim hanley tonight(source daily mirror) whether he is goin to stay or not? this is gettin to be a bit of a joke. reminds you of waterfords situation two years ago. he is deeply disallusioned with the setup at the moment.

The bottom line is that the budget has to be cut, however, who knows on what basis last seasons cut was sold to him. Personally I think this could be a convenient out for both sides. We don't have to pay compo as we didn't sack him, and he gets to walk away head held high citing he didn't get support from the board.
The majority of fans will rightly or wrongly be happy that he's gone, but as I said somewhere else, be careful what you wish for. It can't have been deemed a good move unless we actually get a better manager, or at least stay the same with a better style of football.
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.
Keeley for Town manager. Sure why not, he's had every other club in the league. Why not go full circle and start again with us!
