Two-goal Mark Burchill saved Celtic’s blushes in an entertaining friendly before a crowd of 6,000 at Turners Cross, Cork.

He pounced for the winner 15 minutes from the end after Cork had threatened to spoil the party by snatching a dramatic equaliser from the penalty spot.

Neil Lennon combined with Shaun Moloney for Burchill to side foot home from close range.

The home side had made it 2-2 just after the hour, when Waterford-born Jim Goodwin fouled Neal Horgan in the area and Kelvin Flanagan expertly tucked away the penalty.

That effort cancelled out Celtic’s lead goal three minutes into the second-half, when Burchill’s shot eluded replacement ‘keeper Michael Devine.

City stunned the champions by taking a shock lead four minutes before the break.

Derek Coughlan split the defence with a long ball for James Mulligan to run onto. Cork's record signing controlled it neatly, before rounding the stranded Dimitre Kharine and slotting the ball into the empty net.

The lead only lasted four minutes as the treble champions grabbed an equaliser with the last act of the half.

Didier Agathe's right wing cross was flicked on by Chris Sutton into the path of Jackie McNamara, who beat Noel Mooney at his near post with a powerful shot.

Celtic, as expected, had the better of the opening 45 minutes, forcing Mooney into a couple of fine saves.

Local lad Liam Miller, experiencing a rare start in the middle of the pitch, warmed to the task, showing up well with some telling touches. Mooney was in action within five minutes of the start, diving to his left to turn away a stinging Tommy Johnson shot.

Sutton should have done better with a free header six yards out after Johnson's cross gave him the opportunity, but his effort flew over the top.

Three minutes later Johnson, who looked dangerous with his penetrating runs, cracked a snap shot narrowly over Mooney's crossbar.

And within a minute the City 'keeper did well to hold a Steven Crainey left foot effort.

Eight minutes before the break Crainey unleashed another powerful attempt from 30 yards which just whizzed past Mooney's upright.

Celtic played out the closing 10 minutes with 10 men after Oliver Tebily went off injured and the Scots had brought on all their substitutes.
