    Monaghan United 1 - 0 Athlone Town

    soccercentral.ie

Monaghan United secured their second successive win of the season courtesy of Trevor Vaughan’s 57th minute headed goal as they overcame a spirited Athlone Town this afternoon.

Vaughan rose highest at the far post to meet John Lester’s free kick after Darren McKenna was fouled by Ronan Frawley.

Athlone Town had the better first half in driving wind and rain at Century Homes Park with Gary Devine to the fore as O’Leary denied him a deserved goal most notably on 37 minutes but it remained scoreless at the break.

The rain and wind abated at the interval and the home side resumed firing on all guns with Lester and McKenna drawing saves from Brennan in quick succession before the vital score from Vaughan.

Both sides tried hard as the weather turned again with Kelly breaching Monaghans offside trap but O’Leary saved.
Vaughan came close with an 18 yard volley which went just over while Conor Frawley made a goalline interception with three minutes remaining.

Town pressed looking for an equaliser as referee Deering added three more minutes but they were unable to break down the United defence.

Elsewhere in the First Division Dublin City overcame Kildare Town at Santry thanks to first hlaf goals from Morris-Roe and Markey.
