excellent piece on a true legend who is a huge asset to United.Hopefully he will have one more game in terryland.
Great piece in the Advertiser on Goughie similar to last weeks Cousins feature.

Yea - Great Piece on Goughie. Comes across as a really great lad. Thought it was great how he wanted to give due recognition to Joe Reilly in Hibs for nursing him back from injury & great how he explained his departure from United when he was at his peak. (I was young at the time. I should have handled it differently).
And he must be the first one I've ever come across to have good things to say about Ollie Byrne. That was definitely an eye opener!
Cian O'Connell has raised the bar with this kind of back page profile. He does it well & hopefully the Advertiser will support his efforts to continue it next season - whatever division we're in.
Ya excellent back page spread about Goughie, well done again to Cian O'Connell.
For anyone who hasnt read it yet, here's the link

Excllent write up for the living legend. The guy is going to get some send off in buckley park.
know goughie got guist player of the year and will probably be in running for the clubs p.o.t.y. but something special for him at buckley park would be well deserved. any suggestions???
you'd never know lads he mightn't have played his last game in front of a packed terryland park yet. if we win and harps just get a result at home then goughy will once more grace the turf of terryland in the playoffs. would be great to see him play just once more in terryland

Great article. But where is Glenina??
KOH
It's where UTD used to play there home games for a while. It could have been while Terryland was been redeveloped?IT's the home of Galwegians rugby club.
My Dad says i was at a game there but i don't really remember it.AFAIK we played on a Sunday afternoon there. The older UTD fans like PD,terry,Saigon, gufct etc will give ayou a proper answer.

it was so funny there used to be 3-4000 at most of the games there but i'd say only around 10% of them paid in. everyone used to hop the little wall at the side

Yeah we played there for most of the 93/94 season. we started the season in the sportsgrounds and played our last home game in harolds X in Dublin.
we had some great games up there, massive crowds, and the sun always seemed to be shining up there!!!!!!!!

Was never crazy about it as a venue BUT we got some brilliant results there, which makes me want to get us back as soon as possible. Conor H is right that we used it while Terryland was being turned around. It was 1993, Goughies first season, the league split after Christmas into 2 mini leagues of 6 teams. Monaghan had a brief Premier spell that year. We started the season indifferently in the Sportsground before really finding our feet in Glenina and having our second best ever league finish. We had a Green away jersey and some brilliant goal scorers (Donie Farragher, Jumbo, Ricky Fla) but the whole thing was built around Goughie. He had an incredible year & I was gutted when he left.
The first game was a 2-1 win against Derry for whom Luther Blissett (former England international and Watford star) was making his debut. We had a 3-1 win over Bohs just after Christmas that I'll never forget.
They are the two games that really stand out for me too. the roar that went up during that bohs game, Maurice O' Driscoll getting sent off.
The funniest thing was bohs got a free kick inside the box for a backpass, it was thumped against the wall, a long ball was played up to Donnie. He was one on one with the keeper and had to score. When he went to kick the ball it was flat as a pancake and it flopped wide !
Shadow the gladiator's helicopter landed in the middle of the pitch for a Cobh game.
We had a massive game against Cork too we had just beaten Rovers 5-2 away and if we could beat Cork we really thought we could win the League.
But I think it was a Pat Morley goal that broke our hearts in a 1-0 defeat.
Remembering those days really makes me long to be rubbing shoulders with the big boys again and challenging them too.Hopefully those days will be back in Galway soon.

Ah Crowley Park! One of the all time best away trips. 3-2 win there in March 1994. 2-0 down at half time and a great comeback. Dont think anybody paid in and the floor in the bar gave way from Rovers fans jumping on it
Rtengland didnt bother to turn up though
Believe Galwegians have sold the ground.
Good luck tomorrow night. Premier needs Galway more than dundalk.

Yea that 3-2 win for you was a really hard to take, although we knew we couldn't improve on third by then. It wasn't the only time we were too generous to you either - so at least we put that right this season
I think 'Wegian's still own Crowley Park. 'Though there is constantly stuff about a possible merger with another city rugby club and selling off what would appear to be a very valuable asset.
Put it right all you want we've got the trophy
