Dunfermline obviously gave him an ultimatum. I'm sure he'd at least have waited a week if he could. When an opportunity comes knocking that you want to take you can't afford to wait. In spite of how much some think of the league clubs from Britain are not coming knocking for our managers on a regular basis. His stock may fall in the future and the opportunity may not present itself again.
