    Floodlight failure deliberate?

    aertel
Russia is checking to see whether a floodlight failure that abruptly ended its Euro 2004 qualifier with Georgia was a political provocation. 'We would like to believe that this was caused by technical reasons, despite the abundance of other evidence,' the football unions's vice president Valery Draganov stated. 'But if this was planned in advance... the consequences for Georgia will be serious,' he said.. The match was abandoned when the flood lights went out shortly before half time. The match will now be replayed in either November or early next year.

I know there´s a degree of political tension between the two, but surely this isn´t true?!

Why would Georgia sabotage a match they weren't even losing? 0-0 at haftime at home to Russia isn't that bad for them is it?

I doubt it was sabotage. Like you say Pete, they weren´t exactly doing badly. Just the russians stirring things up I reckon.

Anyone think that maybe the Russians themselves could have sabotaged the lights? After all, who had more to lose by the game finishing in a draw? Certainly NOT the Georgians.

I reckon it would have been fairly difficult for the russians to manage that, unless the KGB never really disappeared
