I don't get it with Irish players. When Croatia played class against England it seemed like English clubs couldn't resist the lure of Croatian players, when Ireland get a great result in Paris with St.Ledger being a key man nobody takes notice(and I'm not referring to just English clubs)

I've only seen him play when he plays for Ireland but perhaps he's not nearly as good at club level? Maybe he has an attitude problem? I'm not saying he does, but there must be some reason that a Premiership club has not come in for him yet. Maybe he's just not good enough to perform consistently at the level required in the top flight?

I don't think that the Ron Atkinson at Peterboro, fly on the wall TV programme done Sean SL any good. He came across as a young mouthy upstart. I know it was a few years ago but first impressions and all that. However football wise he has been fairly impressive anytime I've seen the lad playing.

His loan period is over but according to the info linked on this thread, Middlesbrough are contracted to sign him in January in a done deal for £4m.

That is true, but I've heard he wants to go back to Preston as he's not impressed with or settled at Middlesbrough.

I think he will go back to Preston and be sold to a Premiership club or Italian club in the summer.

it would be good to see him go to a serie a club and mcgeady go to bayern or someone like that. It would open other players up to the idea of playing abroad too.

Celtic up bid for St-Ledger (Tabloid Report)

Celtic bid for Sean St Ledger while Ross McCormack admits he'd love Parkhead switch / SUNDAY MAIL

CELTIC have upped their bid for Preston stopper Sean St Ledger to £3million

The Championship club booted out an earlier £1.75m offer but Celts have now gone back in.

And the Irish ace could be joined at Parkhead by Cardiff star Ross McCormack who last night urged his boyhood heroes to make a swoop.

New signing Morten Rasmussen made an impact at Hamilton yesterday by coming off the bench to seal a 1-0 win.

And boss Tony Mowbray later admitted he was keen to bring in more fresh faces.

One of those could be long-time target St Ledger.

MailSport can reveal the Hoops have offered North End £2.25m immediately with the potential for close to £1m in add-ons.

However, Preston still hope to get a guaranteed £3m and more negotiations will take place. St Ledger could help seal the deal by begging Preston to let him join Celtic.

The 25-year-old is desperate to play for Mowbray and is set to make his feelings clear to chairman Derek Shaw.
    ......................................
    .......
And the Parkhead club are locked in talks with Spanish side Real Mallorca over defender Ivan Ramis.

Mallorca value the 25-year-old at £3.5m but sources in Spain suggest the cash-strapped club would sell for £2.5m.

Celts have increased their initial £1.5m bid to £2m and talks are ongoing.

Mowbray was giving little away yesterday but said: "We're trying to get the team I want. Hopefully we'll add one or two more over the next few days."

If it were me I am not too sure if I would be too excited about signing for Mowbray.

Mowbrays record has been awful and the team have been playing rubbish, but I think Im still inclined to give him a little bit more time. He is in the middle of getting rid of an awful lot of players and totally rebuilding the squad. Id give up until next season before I judge him properly

He would be ****ing away the best years of his career going to Celtic. Just look at their squad at the moment and that gives you an idea of the doldrums they are in and will remain in for quite a while. Sledge is a good prospect and will certainly get his move to the Premiership soon. I just hope he realises how bad a move to Celtic would be for him

I'd love to know why Mowbray deems it necessary to totally rebuild a squad that has been quite successful over the last 3-4 years. I've only ever seen managers do it where the squad has been unsuccessful.

I think there was an awful lot of deadwood in the squad. Strachen seemed to buy players without having a plan of where he was going to play them.Willo Flood was a good example.

Rumours that PNE can't/won't agree a fee with Celtic for St Ledger, so looks as if the deals off, expect Ramis to sign for Celtic instead.

St Ledger angry at Preston's Celtic cover-up

Preston North End defender Sean St Ledger has blasted his club for shutting him out of talks over a move to Celtic. The English club refused offers from Celtic for the centre-half ahead of the transfer window closing on Monday.

Preston had placed a high valuation on the Republic of Ireland international and Celtic had an initial bid declined by the club. They returned with an improved £3 million offer which was also rejected but the player was unhappy he had not been kept up to date with developments by his own chairman, Derek Shaw.

“The club didn’t accept a bid so I just have to get on with it,” St Ledger admitted.

“If would have been nice if the chairman had returned my calls though. It would have been nice to be kept in the loop and he still hasn’t spoken to me which is disappointing.”

St Ledger confirmed that he would have been keen on signing up at Parkhead if a fee had been agreed. The stopper also revealed that seeing one of his international team-mates join the Glasgow club had made the disappointment worse.

“The move is something I would have definitely considered if there had been a bid accepted,” he said.

”I think everyone who plays for Ireland always has a link to Celtic. The draw of Champions League football was great but it wasn’t to be. There is also the draw of playing in front of 60,000 fans but that is over now.

“It’s a pity because you just have to look at the scenes from the other night when Robbie [Keane] went there. You could see all the Irish flags, that would have been great.”

I think you missed this bit:

St Ledger is now focused on his career at Deepdale but says Preston chairman Derek Shaw failed to keep him informed of developments.

"Everyone who plays for Ireland always has a link with Celtic - I'm Catholic as well," the centre-half said. "It would have been massive for me had I had the opportunity but I didn't.

"The club didn't accept the bid but it would have been nice if the chairman had returned my calls."

    Doh!!
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Reckon his chairman done him a favour. The likelihood is that a premiership club will come in for him in the summer, he will probably earn more than he would at Celtic, but he would be playing against superior opposition in the PL than he would meet in the SPL. The lad has time on his side, he should just knuckle down and let his football do the talking. I reckon he can go all the way.

But generally the comments are a bit lame. Fine, you would have liked to have gone to a massive club with a proud history etc... but because 'I saw Irish flags on the telly' and 'Im a catholic' is a bit ridiculous. Footballers should definitely talk less............

THis is a lot worse than lame or ridiculous. I like Sledge but the Catholic comment is idiotic and reprehensible. What would the reaction have been had Lafferty or Little made similar comments about their Protestantism when signing for Rangers?
