that uruguayan writer would say robbie plays the game the right way, and tries to do special things. critics will always bemoan his (perceived?) lack of simple play. but ireland are largely a simple team and we need special players like robbie and duff, without them we'd be frankly boring. and f*cked.

Been busy at work & haven't had a chance to read the board or papers. Was Robbie injured or just not included in the match day squad? Is he available to play Ittly (Ronnie Whelan's pronunciation)?

the word on the today leicester o.s. is that he is on stand-by,has been over the weekend, but as yet no call. could come though. Maybury is also on stand-by.

McCarthy has withdrawn from the u21s with a slight ankle injury.

Twisted ankle in training on Friday. Some swelling.
The rumour of Robbie to Newcastle has raised its ugly head again, radio 5 live sports report that Spurs have made an offer for Jenas and there was a mention of Robbie as part of the deal.

4 strikers at one club is too many, unless they are squad members. Something has to give and I think Jol doesnt like robbie

    a bit off-topic, a bit on

hopefully newspapers just being newspapers. i was thinking 'ugh newcy again' but after seeing some of emre and parker, they might have the midfield for a decent side this year. it's a big *might* since they could be gank at the back. agin arsenal carr frittered a swiss (away) style pass across the top of his box which gave bergkamp an early shot and had me gritting my teeth.

yea really. eh lessee, newcy for keane bad except maybe not coz of their new midfield. except maybe yes newcy = bad for keane coz their defense could be crap and carr did his best imitation of himself vs. switzerland away, which made me mad. ahem.

Carr has been in decline for years now.. gone are the days with his great runs up the flanks.. he is a liability and i cant wait till kelly comes through

As for robbie, he is gone. Jol doesnt rate him, didnt rate him out in where ever they won that cup in Asia and doesnt rate him now. Robbie maybe injured but his style of play doesnt fit in with Jols dutch run outfit

Perhaps Chris Hughton ought to get out video of Holland v Ireland in June 2004 to remind Jol what Robbie can do!

The others were not a patch on that one. Lucky shin deflection against the Saudis, the Dutch let him run on and on and on in 2004. More luck against Iran it could have gone anywhere, lucky the goalkeeper was on his way to the deck.. again. And against Germany, handed to him on a plate by Quinn.
And of course penalties don't count, doesn't matter if its the last kick of the biggest game of his life, beamed live around the world, still doesn't count.
In fact I am even questioning if he actually meant to stick it in the back of the net against Holland 2001 with his head, if you look close enough was he not first going to attempt the bicycle kick a la Mick Leech.
Jolly, I think the secret is out that Robbie's head is about as usefull as Duff's head when it comes to scoring goals with, maybe marginally more usefull as so far he has not used it to prevent a goal being scored.

Thanks for that. Not to mention they are struggling like hell without our O'Brien.

There's a lot of talk in the English rags this morning that Spurs are to offer Robbie plus cash to Newcastle for Jenas.

well im glad he got that goal against spain showed a lot of character imo . even though you maintain it doesnt "count" if you were going to be so damn picky on what constitutes a good goal for everyone there wouldnt be a lot of good strikers left in the world
