Yes, and Robbie Keane also scored more international goals than Zinedine Zidane and Pavel Nedved put together.

What point are you trying to make exactly?

A lazy, greedy, apathetic, unambitious flash harry who is lucky to have his name spoken in the same breath as genuine legends such as Steve Finnan and Kevin Doyle.

Should Robbie ever develop a sentient boil on his @ss, that's the level of critique and intimate personal insight I imagine it would level at him.

God forbid that Irish fans might have an elevated esteem of our best ever goalscorer.

though i know the point you are making SF, its not "elevated" at all. Its thoroughly deserved.

Strikers are judged on the currency of goals scored. For brine3 to compare him to Zidane and other such luminaries is absurd and illogical. Some of the best players in the world havent scored as many goals as some of the best strikers in the world but we are not claiming RK as one of the best players in the world but simply one of the most prolific, the most prolific in the British Isles and Irelands greatest ever scorer.

Ridiculous the amount of unwarranted abuse and the lack of respect our greatest ever scorer and greatest current player gets. He is a legend.

Well as a club/franchise they began as the NY/NJ Metrostars for starters.

They're hardly the first NY named sportsteam to be based in NJ.

If you had been following it was because somebody was going on about how Robbie Keane had scored more international goals than Bobby Charlton, who, like Zidane, is not an out an out striker.

But if we want to compare only out and out strikers, Robbie Keane also scored more international goals than Van Basten, Van Nistelrooy, Klinsmann, Raul, I could go on. But obviously not as many goals as the prolific Ali Daei, who must be the greatest striker in the history of international football by your reckoning.

20 of Robbie Keane's goals were scored in friendly matches. Another 9 came against Malta, San Marino and Cyprus. That means of the 51 goals, 22 were scored against decent opposition on meaningful matches. In a 14 year career. It's what you'd expect from any half decent striker who always gets picked for his country because there is no competition for his place.

I still think that Stapleton is Ireland's greatest ever all-round striker. He worked his arse off for the team.

And as for greatest current player, I'd say that Robbie Keane comes in fourth after Given, Duff and Dunne. But there's no shame in that. They are top players.

why the need to create a sub-category?

whats your rationale for that? None of them have come close to reaching Keanes level of achievements except Given. And even at that i dont think Given has saved us as many games as Keane has won us.

And your qualification of Keanes goals is a red herring. Why dont you do the same with every other striker? Goals are goals.

You're joking, Given has been an absolute rock for Ireland. He has saved us loads of points.

The question was - has Given saved us more points than Keane has won?
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

You must know you're struggling to make a decent argument when you take Keane's "meaningless" goals away (including against Cyprus- the very same team that spanked us 5-2) and he still has more than any other Irish striker ever.

I think brine3 is struggling hard, Mammy and Daddy think he's safely tucked up in bed, yet he's sitting down in the play room with the family laptop wumming. Cannot see any sensible argument against acknowledging RK as a good striker who has served our country well. Full stop.

It's some sort of measure of his achievement and ability for his position. Why bother keeping such a record at all? And as boovidge so appropriately points out, even if you are to exclude what you perceive to be his "meaningless" goals, he'd still be a goal ahead of our next highest ever scorer Niall Quinn. That's just an indication of how way ahead of the rest he is. Robbie's job is to score goals for us, and on that basis, he's outdone himself, be it in friendlies, "banana skins" or big games. His commitment is beyond question. He's an Irish legend just as Ali Daei is so rightly and obviously an Iranian legend.

The patronizing tone that the hacks on the radio are taking re Robbie is quite something. It's starting to get beyond a joke.
I had to turn of Today FM earlier because of it.

I never said otherwise. A good striker who has served our country well. That's about it. But I'll always think of what he could have been if he had the brains to match his god given talent.
