Keane subbed and not happy. Tactical substition
He scored but wasnt great this afternoon. Am glad he came through ok though. Andy Reid and himself had a long chat after the game. Maybe as captain Robbie will have a word with Trap give him a run down on how Reid excelled today.
94 caps, 40 goals
I reckon his goals are directly responsible for at least 8 pts in the campaign.
I hope he hits the net against France, the man is a hero!
"No regrets, none at all. My only regret is that we went out on penalties. That's my only regret. But no, no regrets." -Mick McCarthy
I agree, I would love it if he bagged a goal or a few against the French over the two legs. He's got a knack for scoring goals against the big nations (Germany '02, Italy '09), and I think I'd bank on him getting at least one over the two matches.
Glad to see him score a goal on the weekend for Spurs- hopefully this will have him confident going into these matches.
I've been a big fan or Robbie for a long time but I'm worried about the form he has shown at club level this season. Thankfully he is playing well for Ireland, lets hope that continues over the next two games and beyond.
Always look on the bright side of life
Keane's club form never seems to relate directly to his International form. He only started a handful of matches for Leeds in the 01/02 season yet went on to have a great WC. He was playing out of his skin for Spurs during our last campaign and was in very poor form for us. This campaign has probably been his best ever, his goals directly responsible for 8pts in the group, yet his club situation was very rocky for some of it.
yes his form at spurs is a bit off but hes top scorer with 8 goals there(defoe 7).good return at this time of the year. prefer him to be scoring and not playing that well than playing well and missing chances. hes grand IMO, ticking along very nicely.
He always does well when there is no pressure on him.
At Liverpool there was massive pressure.
But the guy has done brilliantly for Ireland especially for 2002 WC. Scored against Iran in Dublin in the qualifier, scored against Germany in the WC and scored the peno against Spain in the second round.
I've always seen Keane as a player who performed better under a bit of pressure, like his first stint at Spurs when Defoe was competed with him for a starting place. The Liverpool situation was a bit different in that I don't think it mattered how well he performed, Benitez didn't want him and that was that.
exactly. benetiz did everything he could to dent his confidence to make him look bad and get rid of him. on 2 occasions he scored 2 goals in games and both times he was benched the next game. dont think benetiz wanted him to get going. 100% banetiz wanted him out asap. tosser.
Incorrect my friend. Benitez did want him but wanted Barry first then Keane. I saw i'd say 95% of Keanes games home and away last season for Liverpool and it kills me to say it but it just wasn't happening for him. Some games you wouldn't have thought he was playing in. His last ever game against Everton on the Monday evening sumed it all up for me he was awful. In saying that i agree that Benitez was wrong to drop him when he scored at Arsenal and the following game at home to Bolton. Too easy to say he was taken off all the time as in all those games he started and last 60-70 mins and was contributing nothing. Just one of those moves that didn't work out.
Still think liverpool were crazy to let him go,they probably would have won the league if they kept him. I'm sure he'll perform for us in the playoffs. Keep the faith!
Had he to choose between Keane and Barry, he would have chosen Barry. He wasn't really given that choice, basically it was Keane or no-one.
Had they kept Crouch, and showed Keane and Alonso the respect they deserved last season, they would have started this season as favourites and would be hot on Chelsea heels right now.
This is a classic case of Benitez reaping what he sewed... Good enough for him.
Showed Keane respect? From what I remember Keane was annoyed for being subbed in games with 10 or 20 minutes to go, even though he didn't look like scoring. It was time to change things around.
Robbie is the sort of player if you subbed him in injury time of a game, he would be upset.
