Martin Jol declared his disappointement with Keane and Defoe last night. Robbie was given a chance to show he can score last night against a League 2 team and couldn't do it.
Kilkenny man Michael Reddy for Grimsby by far outshone him.
just to slightly correct you it was Dawson that was brought up front against Chelsea.

Thats probably for the better. I was dreading Keane would score a hattrick and the usuals would be out saying he can only score against crap opposition.Originally Posted by finlma
Watched the first half and Keane did the usual, too many little flicks and kept running off-side...
Whats wrong with this man can he ever have a a few good games in a row...![]()
If he had scored against Russia in the 4-2 away loss he would have broken the Irish record for scoring in consecutive games having scored in the 3 previous internationals (Germany, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Finland)Originally Posted by Condex

In fairness, we're talking about a consecutive run of goals from three years ago. Has he done it recently? We'll need him to produce against the Swiss more than ever, a repeat of his performance against France wouldn't be acceptable.Originally Posted by tetsujin1979
Martin Jol has described his Tottenham side's shock Carling Cup first round defeat to Grimsby as the lowest point of his spell in charge of the club.
Spurs were knocked out by the League Two leaders after Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala smashed home an 89th minute volley from the edge of the area.
"This is definitely my worst moment since coming here," said Jol.
"This must be one of the biggest upsets in the Carling Cup but that's what you can expect losing to a team like that."
Jol, whose side have scored just one goal in their last five games, blamed strikers Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane for failing to make an impact up front.
It is a great night for the town, the club, supporters and players
Grimsby boss Russell Slade
"We aren't scoring goals, and we don't look like scoring goals, which is even worse and is not good enough," added Jol.
"You know that if they get a free-kick or a corner that they can score and that's what happened.
"But we knew that beforehand and you have to make the difference up front. Sometimes we looked a bit immature.
"If you play against big players like they have, then you need to move quick and use your extra mobility.
"Our best player was Aaron Lennon and he is 18, which says it all. I'm a bit angry. When you are a Premiership side you have to win these games."
Let's be honest, Grimbsy seemed to want it much more than us

Grimsby manager Russell Slade was understandably delighted with the result and felt his side were worth the victory.
Slade said: "The players were tremendous. It is a great night for the town, the club, supporters and players.
"We have worked so hard this season and we deserved it.
"The last thing I needed was extra-time. I wanted the game over quickly but to get a goal in the last five minutes was ideal."
Kalala added: "I am just happy for the team. We worked so hard in this game.
"Every time I hit a ball they go over the top but this time I hit the target and I am happy for that."

I was pretty sure Spurs would have problems the Grimsby manager has had some good
results with lesser sides against top teams, at Scarbrough, a team just above
the conference regelation zone he only lost 1-0 to mighty Chelsea (late goal I believe) so I felt it sure would be bad news for Robbie that he would be getting his first start for a while in this game, if it was me I would have feigned injury
He also beat Spurs before (3:0?) with league 1 side Notts County so I though
this was not a good game to try an unfavoured pairing.
Because he found his natural level ??Why would Ireland's best-ever striker choose to play for such a low-scoring team?
I think he is a gonner at spurs even with all his natural ability.
Came on and won a penalty in the Champion's League qualifying round when they were 1-0 down away to Helsinborg which Recoba promptly missed and sent them out. That's why he never played any of Leeds' Champion's League games while there on loan - cup tied since that game.Originally Posted by totalfootball
What?? Why would he move to a high-scoring team - they probably already have strikers scoring plenty of goals.Originally Posted by totalfootball
I think a move to Everton would be good for him cause it more or less guarantees him first team football.
He might be Ireland's leading goalscorer but to say he is the best-ever is highly debatable
To be honest, we have to take our Irish glasses off on this one. Defoe has got as much stick from Jol as Keane has over the result and I would not be suprised if Defoe is dropped for the game against Fulham.

The reason for that being that Wales in the last number of years have better forwards than us eg Hartson, Bellamy, also Robbie Keane started earlier...Originally Posted by totalfootball
He only joined at Christmas, so has only played a few months in the Premiership. 11 goals in that time (including a hat trick) is still pretty impressive for a club like West Brom who didn't score much last season, as well as Robson's baffling decision to keep Earnshaw on the bench.Originally Posted by totalfootball
