That was in the Evening Standard yesterday.
    Sounds very plausable.
After watching Newcastle on Sunday, Robbie would walk into that side.

Keane may be bait: Newcastle could be tempted by the bait of Robbie Keane if Tottenham propose a part-exchange deal for Jermaine Jenas.

Newcastle have so far ruled out selling their 22-year-old England squad midfielder, who yesterday saw his controversial red card at Arsenal reduced to a yellow.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out an approach, but Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is expecting an approach from Tottenham, with suggestions that £5 million plus Keane could be tabled.
Sounds like Robbies on his way out

Didn't Sourness say he's not the type of striker he's lookin for a few weeks ago.Bad move for Robbie imo,who would want to go to play for him,he hasn't got a clue how to manage a team.

i dunno, i'd guess that jol thinks of his strikers as a choice between 1 of keane/defoe playing alongside 1 of kanoute/mido. i don't think they'd play mido and kanoute partnership ahead of keane too often (unless keane's injured, totally out of form, etc), he'd at least join one of them if defoe was injured, for example? so robbie as strictly 4th choice, though it may appear that way, reeks of the brownstuff. why do they want to buy jenas anyway is what i'm wondering

Agreed, I had thought that the over exaggerated, totally irrational tone of my mocking Keane could only lead to one conclusion that AFAIAC he is first choice, he is the best we have up front and we are fortunate to have him. His attitude and commitment to playing for Ireland are unquestionable. His overall play, skill levels, and goal scoring instincts I would say rank him up there or thereabouts with Stapelton.

Has Jol gone mad? What is it with Jermain Jenas? He's s**t. While Keane is a proven International goalscorer. The 5 million should be going to Spurs with Jenas and not the other way around.

Wenger was spot on with his remark about overpriced English players. I hate to see our top players undervalued like this .

I would have thought that a team with aspirations and money would have 4 strikers at their disposal. As you imply, Jol can't get his head around the choice of permutations involved with his strikers. Not only that, he has publically stated it time and time again. Hoddle who signed Keane, imo knew how to get the best out of Keane, esp. with Sherringham in that side.
    >why do they want to buy jenas anyway?
It reminds me off O'Leary's spending spree with Leeds the difference is Spurs have money and are a profitable club despite wasting millions on players like Rebrov. Jol is still confused? retail therapy?

Its all paper talk so far. Where is the evidence that Jol has offered Robbie plus 5 million for Jenas. Too many people believe what is said in websites and in tabloid newspapers. THere are no quotes from any of the articles. Never believe a news story without quotes would be my view.

Jol has always stated that he wants 4 strikers at the club. If anyone is looking to be moved on it seems to be Kanoute from what he is saying .. Robbie has had a great pre season and once he gets over his injury will be challenging defoe for first team spot ... Move backwards going to newcastle for sure ...

Looks like I'm in the minority in wanting him to go to Newcastle.

    Bowyer........Dyer....Parker.........Emre
    ................Keane...Shearer..............

I'd love to see him as first choice in a team like that. Souness is not rated by many but I rate him higher than most. He got Blackburn to 5th or 6th and into the UEFA cup where they did well and I've tipped Newcastle to finish 4th this season if they sign a decent striker and centre half.

they're (newcy) better in the middle than they were last year but at c. half i think boumsong still may have some way to go and there is the question over his partner. lad didn't do too poorly against henry and co. on sunday though. i think emre/parker/shearer/keane would be interesting to see. i'm not as averse to the possibility of robbie going there as i was last year

Then you would have to admit that there is an amount of self intrest involved :-)
Personally I thought Blackburn were humiliated in their 2 uefa adventures under Souness, especially with Celtic rubbing it in in Ewood Park and then the season previous, beaten by a much smaller team afair.
If (i guess) Robbie has only a year to go on his contract with Spurs then it would be to his great financial advantage to hang on in there and make his own choice next year.
Looking at the Newcastle team I think they need a few more than 2 players to cover existing gaps, inevitable injuries and suspensions to make up a squad that could finish 4th.

Souness got that far with Duff and Dunn, then sold them both and dropped down the table. I remember the Christmas report on football365 that season for Blackburn, it went something like

Players In: <list of players including Steven Reid>
Players Out: Damien Duff, David Dunn, <other players>
What They Need: Damien Duff and David Dunn
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

Didn't they sign Boumsong as their idea of a decent centre half, and Kluivert as the striker that has now departed.

I'm talking about in the new season. They need a new centre half to partner Boumsong and a striker to partner Shearer (ie. Keane).

Newcastle have been so unstable in the last few seasons that I'd have reservations about Robbie going up there. Given has expressed concern about the way things are going.

But I think they've made good signings in Parker & Emre. Some of the disruptive influences have gone (Robert & Bellamy) and Kluivert was a selfish, overrated opportunist who sadly had his finest hour against Ireland in 1995! Against Arsenal they looked cohesive and well organised but lacking someone to complement Shearer.

There's a clear opening for Robbie to partner Shearer. A regular spot at Newcastle, particularly alongside a player whose style suits him, would be better than sporadic mix & match appearances alongside Defore, Mido & Kanoute. Spurs also seem to want Kuyt(?), Feyenoord's top-scorer.

It's not a win-win move for him, but better than being unappreciated at Spurs.

I was previously optimistic that Keane would earn his place at Spurs but Jol's comments after Robbie top-scored in Asia seem to have said it all.

    It'd be Spurs' loss.

What were Jol's comments after the Asia tour?

Something along the lines of: Robbie got 4 goals in Asia, but if Jermaine Defoe had played as many games he'd have scored 4 too.
