    Moderating

If a mod insists on closing a thread as has been done on the Cliftonville/Donegal Celtic thread can the thread at least be deleted. When there are slurs on my club surely I have the right to answer those slurs. If not then the slurs should be removed.

It's been nipped in the bud at that point. It could have been your reply last or it could have been dcfcsteve. I've been appointed mod of this forum and hopefully things won't be left go on so long anymore. You'll have to just accept it the way it is.

To be honest I fail to see the need to close it and the attitude of "have to accept the way it is" does not bode well for a mod of a forum in my opinion. There was nothing sectarian or personally offensive to anyone, there was a rational debate on football matters so I seen no problem with the thread. Why was it locked in the first place?

Read the rules of the forum by Éanna. The forum was meant to be about matters of football. Since Éanna left the forum went largely unmoderated. The forum is not meant for revisiting Derry's expulsion, the DC cup game and Cliftonville not being able to play Linfield at Solitude all the time. Every decision won't bode well with you I'm afraid. As I said, it had to be stopped somewhere. It's no personal slight on yourself.

Have to agree to disagree, particularly as the attitude seems to be like it or lump it. To me it was discussing matters of football ie trouble at football games. Oh and one last thing, Derry were not expelled.

You're at it again! Whatever. It's not up for discussion anymore.

When the forum rules explicitly stated to focus on the football it did not mean to constantly revisit the high politicised episodes of the Irish league over the last few decades.

That's how foot.ie works and always has done. Now, you have a propensity to debate things ad nauseum. I won't debate this any further. They're the rules.

That attitude to be honest stinks and is certainly not ideal for a forum in my opinion. I have moderated forums in the past and as long as there is nothing personally offensive then I would usually let it go unless it was nothing whatsoever to do with football. Maybe it is attitude like this that has seen decent posters leave this forum in the past.

I've been watching that thread (and once warned dcfcsteve for calling David an idiot or something llike that) but in genereal it was the two of them going at each other I thought it best to leave them alone as both definitely knew what they were talking about, and in the main were civil towards each other

Its an Irish League forum. Why is it being moderated by a UCD fan?

I would agree with that. I have no problem with people strongly disagreeing with me, that is what a forum is all about, expressing opinions. It must stay civil though and not resort to petty name calling and there was none of that on the thread that was locked.

    David,

The IL forum is a problem for us, which is why we appointed a mod. It's a problem because, in the main, the same old discussions are coming up again and again and again. You're partly responsible for this - although you're not the only one - so you might not be able to see it, but that's how it is. Having the same old dicussion over and over again does not a good forum make, so now we're trying to improve it.

As PS said, that's the way it is, and that's the way it's going to be, and I'm afraid if you don't like it, reiterating your complaints here again and again - rather ironically - isn't going to help. We understand your point, however the decision has been made to knock it on the head. If you'd still like to continue discussing the IL without all of the repitition, you're welcome; if it's going to continue, I'd suggest you give one of the forums you mentioned earlier a try.

We do things differently here on Foot.ie, that's the entire point of the site. Some people don't like it, which is a pity, but I'm afraid I'm not going to change my whole philosophy of online discussion to suit just a few people.

    Thanks,
    adam

As I said, simply have to agree to disagree. Personally I do not think that the dictatorial attitude makes for a good forum but at the end of the day that is up to the powers that be on this forum.

No one answered my question. Why can't one of the IL people moderate the forum?

Because there aren't that many, I suppose.

What's the harm in a UCD fan modding the forum anyway?

No offense to UCD fans but I just think an IL forum should be moderated by an IL fan. The thread that was closed should never have been closed. If he wanted to split the thread and move the non football part to Current Affairs, he should have done that.

Only two IL fans have been put forward as moderators, and both are unable to resist the temptation of getting into the arguments we're specifically trying to stop.

David, Foot.ie has been run the way it is today since it began more than five years ago. We're doing pretty well with it I reckon.

Its not that I don't like the forum or you. I'm fine with the moderation 90% of the time. Its just that occassionaly I find the moderation goes over the top and there were two incidents today that really took the biscuit.

The thing is that there are loads of moderators and we all have different ways of doings things. Mods also make mistakes.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy this forum. It's just at times it seems to go over the top which has led to people leaving the forum who were decent posters. I agree totally with Bohs Partisan on this one. We are never all going to agree on everything but surely that is what a forum is for. I really dislike the dictatorial attitude being adopted here. I would like to think that I have never been personally offensive to anyone. I will debate my point with the best of them and I will argue until I am blue in the face if I feel I am right. I know I can be stubborn but I will not let slurs against my club go and continually some Derry City supporters simply cannot resist having a dig at Linfield. At the end of the day though that is up to them and fair play to them for it, equally I will come in and defend us. As I said, all part and parcel of being on a forum.

As for being a mod, under these circumstances I would not touch it was a barge pole as I could not close threads or deal with people in the manner that it is occasionally done on this forum. At the end of the day you run the forum so it is your decision and fair play to you but I think the "I am right and I don't care what you think anyway" attitude is a poor one and certainly not ideal for someone in your positionj on a forum. It smacks of a bit of the kid that owns the ball who insists things are done exactly how he wants or he will go home with the ball. If this gets me banned then so be it but I will continue to speak my mind (if I am not banned of course) and I will continue to defend my club when they are criticised and I will continue to put my point across. It is called debate.
