Yep, madness. Might be an exaggeration but this is the quote from the CEO:
“We had to concede that we wouldn’t do as much with the Treacy Avenue and Railway End as we had hoped to do. The cost of roofing the Railway End stand alone was €2.7m. Just to put a roof over 1500 seats."

Huge cost involved though. I read recently that Sligo dropped plans to put a roof on the Railway End because they were quoted €2.7m(!)
stand was built before building regs in order to satisfy engineers etc it would have had to be an elaborate structure that was standalone to wrap around the stand in order to roof it, pity we never roofed it at the time as it was built so that a roof could be put on at the time but regulations have moved on.

Costs are always going up of course but Im not surprised at the figures. People dont tend to believe that large amounts of money have been spent on Oriel Park when not a lick of paint to make the place look a bit better was neglected. Old stadia just suck up money and retrofits are often more than a new build. Main reason to no just demolish and rebuild is planning and being exposed to new regulations or ending old exemptions. 5 or 10 years ago and Shels would probably have had to do a traffic impact report stuff, so bsically parking around Tolka which would be a problem and impede things while raising cost. Now we can do the whole 15 minute city, community hub, bus routes (or spaceships) rather than obsess about cars. There will always be at leasI 1 neighbour with an objection, indeed I could submit an objection to Sligo's development just for the sake of it and hold things up especially if i had a wedge of money for it.

i do think if a grant is involved that there seems to be a +20% random charge applied by cinstruction companies. Its used to be in case the project ran out of funding so companies were hedging risk (thank you Shamrock Rovers), then it was well its government money so off a broad back rather than it being public money. Then Celtic Tiger greed, land swaps, Finn Park stuff where developers wanted all the benefit but non of the risk. Now its post pandemic supply chain chokes, expensive labour (that we can import from other EU countries for less if people didnt just see 'immigrant' etc), wars, inflation etc etc that have always existed.

Solutions? Well joint projects where its isnt just 1 stand at 1 club thats out to tender but maybe a league wide tender. Minimal traditional Irish developers, tender far and wide so local opportunists have to reign things in. Then its suck it up, reorientate our expectations and perception on the value of money, bang for buck. and then wait for all the all the minor stuff to be sorted like cost of living (wage expectations), housing, energy, etc that take a decade or so to sort unless yuu are Sinn Fein and it will all be sorted in 24 hours. Dezoning land and resoning it for sport use only will drive some cost down, its not as if we dont have lots of space nationally for residential zoning rather than a lot of people eyeing up Dalymount or Tolka previously or Carlise Grounds. One thing for sure is that we can bin the €1m per 1000 seats rule of thumb, but we still should be looking at new technologies in construction and pushing LoI as urban communties like St Pats tried, Bohs eventually turned DCC away from white water rafting on the Liffey and will be a hub rather than a hindrence. Ach Im ranting now but when you see reasonably costed small grounds in the UK its annoying to feel like you should have Croke Park for a 1k stand.....£250m for Casemet Park?? I know thats UK but its a wee bit Irish!

Cheers for the insight. Absolute rage that - wasn't the stand only built in 2012?! Sligo Rovers leading the way by planning ahead only to get punished for it. Gotta credit the club for such forward thinking and critique the gov for waiting so long to get you the funding.

What exactly do you mean? I've read the recent interactions in this thread but I am a little puzzled by what you mean by this. Can you elaborate as the point you are making has flown right over my head?

I guess you are being critical of either the poster, engineering regulations or maybe something else I have not picked up on.

I'm guessing (or at least hoping) this was sarcasm. If not you be waiting for a logical reply.

Yes it was just a throwaway joke. No need to overthink it.

Was chatting about this with a friend last night. I've no idea what the situation is or what the plan is with the wall at Bishopsgate after the storm blew it over. The last and only update out of the club was back when it happened, and saying that it happened.

I'd like to know if there's a plan with that at this stage because nothing has been said since. The rubble itself has been cleared away. I'm surprised they didn't try another gofundme or something cuz I'd say you'd get a few bob out of that. Or something like the buy-a-brick thing like Shamrock Rovers do either.

I haven't heard anything either but they may still be engaging with their insurers on it maybe. Claims can drag on.

A gofundme/idonate style fundraiser is imminent on this. Likely to be launched in the next week or two I believe.

Very strange timing. Surely the swell of sympathy you'd have got in the aftermath of the storm is long gone?

I have said for years a buy a brick scheme like Rovers and Sligo both have is a no brainer

I don't know the ins and outs of it but I'd say Longfordian probably onto something above with regards insurance claims etc. Possibly had to wait for that process to conclude before an official fundraiser could begin?

Would agree with you though in terms of much of the sympathy probably having passed by now.

Done, much as campaigns to build a wall are generally problematic these days! €50k is going to be a tall order but hopefully as much as possible can be raised anyway.

Would insurance and additional Govt money directed to businesses effected by the storm, not have made up the cost of reinstating the wall?
