    What will be Cyprus' punishment?

For their fans attacking our players?

Docked points? A fine? Explusion from the tournament (not going to happen)? Anything at all?

I know it was UEFA security but its still Cypriot fans attacking another teams players and its a disgrace. Hope they don't get off lightly.

Didn't see it. When did it happen? Straight after the game?

Our players were pelted with bottles, coins etc. when Cork City played there against Limassol in the Champions League. Andy Needham of the FAI was hit with a bottle. Their players attacked Danny Murphy and Joe Gamble at the final whistle. Did anyone every get punnished? Joe Gamble and Danny Murphy got red cards.

Was during the game just after the penalty -Stephen Ireland played on when Satsias was down 'injured' and a group of Cypriot fans ran onto the pitch and attacked him. The rest of our team went over to help (the Cypriot team did nothing) and there was a bit of a ruck before it was broken up.

No way!! I'm against playing on when a man is down but there's no justification to run on the pitch and physically attacked players. Irish fans didn't attack the Israeli keeper in the last qualifiers for his antics!

It's the referee's job to stop the game, if he thinks it's necessary.

    Brilliant post

The ball should have been put out by us, the man got a boot in the balls, albeit accidental. If it was the other way round people would be on here complaining.

Still Cyprus should be punished for fans coming onto the pitch, I didn't see it myself.

It was always an unwritten rule and I'm pretty sure that FIFA instructed teams not to put the ball out of play if such an incident occured, and to leave the ref stop play if he thinks it should be.

FIFA did no such thing, the English FA but typical of the British (and I include our players there as they all live in Britain) that they think whatever the premiership does is right. Anyone see one of the irish players having a go at one of the cypriots who went down with cramp in final minutes. They were 5-2 up and obviously NOT timewasting. Idiots

Oh and you're presuming it wasn't a disgruntled Irish fan...

Who?? The group a blatantly Cyrpiot men, some in Cypriot replica strips attempting to assult Stephen Ireland???

It's not a debate about whether Ireland should have put the ball out or not. yea they probably should but Ireland could have punched a Cypriot player in the face and that still wouldn't justify running on the pitch to assult players. You can't let it happen; it's not safe for the players or the fans. I know it was a different situation, more extreme and long ago but just look at Belfast Celtic -where do you draw the line over when it is acceptable for fans to run onto the pitch and attack players whatever they have or haven't done?

Answer -it never is. Punish the team/country; it's the only way. I say dock Cyprus 3 points and give them a fine.

As far as I know, IFAB endorsed the modifications to the laws of the game, with regard to time wasting, etc. and FIFA have representitives on IFAB.

Perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to dive in, Dodge.

Well I was giving a suggestion as to why the ball wasn't kicked out of play. I never said if it should have or shouldn't have.

Exact same thing happened a few minutes earlier in the England Macedonia game, I was swirching back and forth.

Macedonian player went down and was clearly writhing in pain. England played on for maybe 30 seconds til the ref stopped the game. The Macedonian players went up to Peter Crouch who then pushed one of them and there was a big scuffle.

They should scrap this rule. It's a load of ********.

Its a good rule as its the refs job to stop play if a player really injured. Most others sports play on so should be good enough for football.

Seems to be standard practice in Nicosia - big moat around the pitch but no security. Cork City players were pelted with coins, lighters & even flags during the CL qualifier game & Uefa did nothing at all. Of course if someone called a players a "Black/white/yellow ba****d..." would points deduction & match behind closed doors.

    Might explain the "replica strips".
