Players go down with an 'injury' quite often when their defenders are out of position and the other side is counter-attacking ... I didn't see this particular incident (living in the UK) but it is creeping into the game and it is unfortunate because it means that there will always be a certain degree of suspicion even when a player has a genuine injury. Another reason teams don't always kick the ball out is because when the other team 'returns' the ball, they kick it out for a throw in just by the first team's by-line ... if the ref feels the injury is serious he will stop play. Of course, what they could do is do what the rugby lads do and just play on - allow the trainer on but play resumes around them. Players would not go down to waste time then!!
