I just placed my first and only bet on the Ireland manager market on Houllier at 55/1. I assume there must be news that hasn't made it to this part of the world yet but feck it.

Houllier is still 5/2 with PP, Chandler and Ladsbroke. Venables is 4/6 with Ladsbroke, 11/10 PP and 4/5 Chandler

All I can say is that something appears to be stirring within certain circles

Houllier out in all betting. Paddy Powers have him at 8/1 . Venables 10/11. Tigana 4/1. Venables is odds on now with all the bookies.

Yeah it looks like its (finally) El Tels now. Can't wait to see how the FAI try to spin this diabolical appointment if true.

The odds I got were not as good. Backed him at 5/2 when he started to drift last week. Any win from a bookie softens the blow. Though I'll have to give soccerc a small pay out cause I didn't believe Venables would get it!
(If he does get the job!)
There'll be snow on that one.

Givens expects new boss to be in place before Brazil

He was understandably careful not to give much away but Don Givens has given a clear indication that he expects a new manager to be ratified and appointed before the friendly with Brazil on February 6.

Amid speculation that leading candidates Gerard Houllier and Terry Venables were dissatisfied with the financial package on offer, Givens stated that there had been no such blip and anticipates a smooth enough passage once they complete their remaining interviews and present a name to the board.

That should be next week but, despite that, the caretaker Irish boss feels it would be unfair on a new man to throw him straight into preparations for the game with Brazil after having no part in the picking of the squad.

“The logic of the whole thing says that if I pick the squad it would be very unfair on the new manager.

If he is named before Brazil, then to come in for a first game against such quality opposition without having had a choice in the squad, would be difficult.

    Hopeful

“I would be hopeful we would have a manager before then. I would envisage him being at the game as a spectator and seeing things without the pressure of being involved.

“We're doing everything we can to get him as soon as possible.”

Beyond that, though, Givens was not in a position to speak about specific candidates.

Due to reasons of confidentiality, the same approach was adopted in his discussions with the 10-man board on Tuesday night as he feared that if he told them who had been interviewed, then invariably the info would leak out.

“You will never know whom we spoken to,” continued Givens. “That is one of the things we emphasised to candidates. We will never say you were interviewed. If they want to come out and say it then that's their prerogative

“I didn't tell the board and will not tell the board who we've spoken to. As soon as you tell someone, it's out.”

Strong indications suggest that Houllier is the preferred candidate, but while not divulging anything of that nature, Givens did admit that he reckoned there was broad agreement on a choice between himself, Don Howe and Ray Houghton.

“After each interview we've had a bit of a chat and at the end of the process I would say it won't take us long to come to a conclusion. I think we're generally thinking along the same lines.”

Givens is unhappy with aspects of the media coverage of the race and was keen to dismiss two persistent rumours about what lies ahead in the dying embers of the prolonged replacement of Steve Staunton – firstly, that the salary on offer is not acceptable to Houllier and Venables and secondly that the board might have the power to veto any choice.

“Anyone who has been interviewed knows the general financial situation and the interviews have gone well,” he stressed.

    Ratified

“I would expect our choice to be ratified. Otherwise I don't think there would have been any point in sending us out.

“In every interview, the financial package has been outlined. Once we make a recommendation and pass it on to the FAI, then it's their baby to get on with.

“If someone has gone for an interview, where the money is mentioned and we push him forward, I can't imagine someone going to the FAI and saying they want 50pc more,” he concluded.

    - Daniel McDonnell

    The emboldened quote suggests Houllier.

Therefore, Houllier is happy with the salary. It' a case of whether the FAI will pay the compensation for the contract. Most likely being agonised over by FAI at this very moment.

That's what happens when your CEO is an accountant.

why should they pay compensation, he is dead right wolfie.

there certainly are benefits to having an accountant as CEO. Though having the CEO might not be a benefit.....

More likely to be them negotiating the compensation fee. Delaney has said that they would be willing to pay compensation.

I kind of doubt that a manager will be in place before Brazil, no smart manager wants that to be their 1st game, lose badly and he would have the presure on him from the begining

He won't be managing the team for that game. Givens is. He will be at the match though.
