I'm not sure there's "support" as such for McCarthy. It was said above, correctly in my opinion, that we simply can't go back that route just because of the cans of worms it'd reopen.

O'Leary vs McCarthy would be an interesting debate on merit, but O'Leary is a candidate simply because he hasn't had the job already and hasn't had his name permanently entwined in the biggest **** up in Irish sports history.

problem is though Neil, we need someone with fresh ideas for the team and McCarthy is not the man for that. Granted neither are any of the other guys being mentioned so looks like we're fooked!

in a heartbeat!!!! He's the 'right' age as well. If the FAI signed him up then I'd be happy to wait until May/June to get this guy.

I agree I dont want Mc Carthy but I am just saying that his record does need to be looked at in full and his international experience has to go in his favour.

If McCarthy took it, expect an immediate and permanent mass withdrawal of squad players from Sunderland.

If Hoddle gets it, that's an end to any idea that LOI players would be considered, never mind selected. At least Staunton went to the odd game. Hoddle wouldn't go to any, full stop.

So who would you prefer? Both men have had relative highs (O'Leary with Leeds in the CL and McC getting Sunderland promoted) and pretty bad lows (both men - same clubs) so its funny that there seems to be a bit of support behind McCarthy and absolutely none behind O'Leary...

Seems to be a bit of rose-tinted memories methinks....
O'Leary's high is getting a small team into the semis of the Champions League, with a team he was instrumental in building. Mick's club high was getting a big team back into the Premiership. There is no comparison.

Mick's low was scoring a record low number of points in the Premiership, O'Leary's was p*ssing off Leeds and being OK-ish at Villa.

I really don't get why people are so opposed to O'Leary. If he was Spanish and had achieved the success he did at e.g. Seville we'd be biting his hand off.

What's O'Leary's low with Leeds, 5th in the Premiership? Won 7 of his last 10? He had a bad couple of months following that court case and made a mistake with that book but a lot of history has been rewritten regarding his time at Leeds. Venables took over a team that had underperformed the previous season yet still finished 5th and took them into a relegation scrap.....I'd take O'Leary at this stage.

Genuine question, as a mtter of interest would you consider Keane a good option given he emulated McCarthy by getting Sunderland up yet is struggling now on a budget ten times what McCarthy had when he took them up? I know some people would love to see him despite his relative failure so far this season.....

Are you trying to say that Keane would withdraw players from slection for IReland because Mc Carthy is the manager despite the fact that Quinn is the chairman there and the players would want to play.

It appears to me that Keane and Mc Carthy have got over Saipan, surely the fans should too.

Leeds = small team????? O'Leary got a wealthy, well supported team to the semis of the CL.
McCarthy got a financially struggling Sunderland to the Premiership.

    Both relatively good highs....

fair point re: O'Leary at Leeds but things went very sour for him at Villa towards the end. And no, I wouldn't take Keane. I don't think he's proven himself yet as a manager...getting Sunderland promoted was a great achievement given where they were when he took over but, as you say, he got a lot more funds that McCarthy.

As an aside, I was really hoping to make this debate without Saipan being mentioned!!!

Wasn't bringing RK into it as a reference to Saipan, just as a comparison with MM given the fact that we're talking about the same club they're both struggled in the PL with. MM was severlt financially restricted last time Sunderland went up which has to be recognised as a factor in his failure in the PL. I expected better from Wolves this season though.

Some people are still polarised by Saipan though and will argue MM is a sh1te manager when he's actually half decent and argue RK is a brilliant manager when at this stage he's also half decent at best. He had a great season last year but still spent £6m stg which is a fortune for the Championship. I'd expect him to improve though as long as he holds his nerve, he was never the best at dealing woth losing....

There does look to be a big push on Dalglish. I wonder what rumours are behind the flood of money.
If it stops at 2/1 then I´d guess that he is just being interviewed.

Intriguing character. Of all the candidates he is easily the most successfull club manager
    and the most decorated.

Is there any hope that Delaney sees what we see. None of the current candidates are good enough. Hoddle/Daglish/Venables/Brady/O'Leary take your pick will not qualify us for the World Cup finals.

What do Bertie Vogts and Hitzfeld have in common other than the fact they are both German.

Leeds were a small team in European terms similar in funding to Tottenham or Newcastle today. Ask yourselff if Jol had got Tottenham into the CL semi's how would he be regarded.

Compare him to Houllier who managed a UEFA cup win with Liverpool. From a distance why wouldnt you have O'Leary over him.

The fact that amazes me is that posters on here are completely ignoring O'Leary while giving serious thought to amongst others:

    Paul Jewell (perennial struggler)
Glenn Hoddle (no club success, just about par performance with England)
and unbelievably Brady (never been anything but a disaster as a manager).
