From a purely business perspective, no matter how much one loves ones chosen field, If you were to be headhunted, it would be embarrassing to be then forced to sit down for "interview" with an Under 21 manager, a pundit and a man who managed Arsenal before they were any good to see if you were 'good enough' for the job.
This whole thing's a complete farce and stinks of FAI mismanagement. What's wrong with :
Organise proper selection committe - 1 week.
Inform selection committe to not faff around, and just concentrate on compiling shortlist of all suitable candidates - 1 week
Selection committe return to FAI with shortlist, and decision is made on which man to send the sh* hot salesman waving a wedge of cash to - 3 days.
17 days for a new manager using the Bondvillain initiative.
The John Delaney initiative has so far taken over 60 and counting, and the delay (and seemingly, attitude) has ruled out the likes of Roy Hodgson, Arie Haan and countless others who were apparently, for better or for worse, genuine contenders for the job way back when this farce started in October.
Maybe they weren't for us, but with several more attractive nations than ours still needing a helmer, and the "Premiership sack race" (© The Saaan) no doubt about to begin in earnest, the choices for the Irish job , when the commit-tee finally get their act together and decide what order they should sit at the table at press conferences in say, 5/6 months time, will be pretty much just what's left amongst the chaff, the damaged & the unemployable.

Is Hoddle coming up on the inside rail to claim the job? I don't believe Houllier is interested in the job and so I will rule him out. My gut feeling is that the 3 amigos will place Hoddle first, O'leary second, Brady/Giles or Brady alone third and Venables fourth. The fact that he managed an England team in a World cup finals and managed a top Premiership team will get him the job. Failed at Wolves and Southampton but TV, O'Leary and Brady have also had periods of failure as managers. His imbecilic comments about handicapped people should not count against him as he was on his own cloud to Damascus at the time he made those comments but now seems to have comeback to his senses. Funny thing is if the FAI was offering 400,000 rather than 1mil the same four bookies favs would still be after the job.

Spot on. If a tramp is looking for 20c for a cup of tea, he'll be just as delighted if you gave him a €50 note as he would be if you gave him €100.
Ignoring Venables (which is the correct thing to do) , leaving O Leary in the Dole queue, where he pretty much belongs, leaves us with Hoddle & and the Gilesy / Brady partnership, which, for comedy value, I shall refer to from now on as the Glidey hybrid.
Even forgiving Hoddle for his David Icke style moment of madness in the past, and giving the Glidey hybrid the benefit of the doubt that inspirational stories of jumpers for goalpoasts in Drumcondra & Vancouver and 'my tiiiime aaat ju-veeeen-tuss in the ay-tees.' could still cut it in today's millionaires playground, It's hardly a Capello v Morinho clash of the titans , is it?
Fundamentally, the FAI have mucked this "selection" "process" up so badly that even the prospect of becoming a millionaire (again) can't attract a decent manager here. It's all has-beens, Never-were's and I'll have a go's.
Very sad.
Another brilliantly structured campaign from the FAI; their reputation now thoroughly preceeds them; Football poison. Do not Touch.

If Tony O'Neill was still alive he would have personally flown to California to try "sell" the Ireland job to Klinsman. If that failed he would have flown to Italy to try convince Lippi to take the job. If that failed then try the next top manager. I used to work in UCD in the 80's and met O'Neill on a few occasions and he had a Wenger type feel for what was right for Irish football. If he was alive today he would be viewed as a genius. Our Mourinho, Benitez or Wenger. Crap player but incredible knowledge of the game. John Delaney has the natural intelligence to match Tony O'Neill but not the football nous O'Neill had. Delaney panicked after sacking Stan. And unfortunately showed he is a "fan" rather than an O'Neill type deep thinker about the beautiful game. O'Neill completely trusted his own football judgement because it was based on the many games he watched and studied. Delaney watches highlights. Hires 3 amigos to choose the next manager! O'Neill must be turning in his grave. Get ready for Hoddle whom I will support 100% because I want the Irish team to do well and I don't want a manager to feel under extra pressure from day one.

hoddle is a worst candidate than venables or o'leary, let alone a top candidate like Jol.
this is the guy that's so full of himself he put himself on for a last hurray in the fa cup final whilst at chelsea and has a penchant for humiliating players in training.
i cant think of anyone with worse man management skills in football
paul gascoigne for a start.
his handling of selecting his final 22 for the world cup was a joke.
tony adams criticised hoddle in his book about humiliating beckham during england training, encouraging gascoigne to drink and treating players like "kids".
tim sherwood after being forced out of tottenham
'No one at Tottenham would shed a single tear if Glenn Hoddle was sacked tomorrow. The dressing room is not together and there is no team spirit. He has absolutely no man-management skills.'
That's the problem. We dont have a white-hot salesman who could sell the house, cracks and all, we have a gaggle of old biddy buyers trying to buy a job lot of pollyfilla.
To remain in current Irish pub parlance, We have 3 buyers hanging back cautiously, like nervous newlyweds waiting for the housing bubble to burst, while all around them, all the houses, from Affordable yet functional to Expensive yet desirable are being snapped up by businessmen who are talking up a storm & negotiating themselves a damn good deal, and in the heel of the hunt, our newlyweds (who wasted so many opportunities to buy somewhere decent while waiting for "the right house" to appear in a puff of smoke right where they were standing) will be left living in whatever shabby shack is left when everything good has been snapped up.
If, of course, they dont split up because of irreconcilable differences first.....

Why oh why did we sack McCarthy!? This debacle is really getting sad. We are arguing over which has-been manager who wouldn't land a job with any Premiership (or Championship?) club is the least bad option for Ireland.
very strange comparison....you're talking about a guy that has no prospect of emplyment with prem and champ teams and contrasting him with McCarthy?- A man that would never EVER be employed by a prem team and who's job at Wolves is hanging by a thread...
Having said that, the only people that would be foolish enough to employ (or re-employ as the case may be) either man would be the FAI. I shudder at the prospect of either man being in charge to be honest....

I'm sure I read somewhere that when Hoddle was manager of Tottenham, he used to practise tricks with the players, and got p!ssed off if his wasn't the best.
Dunno if that says more about the squad than Hoddle though
If McCarthy had never managed Ireland before, would we be calling for him to be manager now, given his record at Sunderland and Wolves? I'd say he'd be in with a decent shout. Not an outstanding candidate but more palatable than many of the others.
Kenny Daglish is now 7/4 favourite for the job.
WHat did he drop from

BERLIN, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is to leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season when his contract expires, he told local media on Wednesday.
"I already told the club three weeks ago of my decision to finish in the summer," Hitzfeld told German sports news agency SID.
"I will try again over the next half year to be successful and win as many titles as possible."
Hitzfeld added that he planned to either take over as coach of the Swiss national side or to go back to working as a television analyst.
The 58-year-old began his second stint as Bayern coach on Feb 1 last year, taking over from Felix Magath, and his contract runs through to June this year.
its an interesting point stutts but put it this way: if we assume that McCarthy is let go by Wolves in the next few weeks and that he had never managed Ireland before then the only directly comparible candidate to him (i.e Irish and managed recently) is David O'Leary. So who would you prefer? Both men have had relative highs (O'Leary with Leeds in the CL and McC getting Sunderland promoted) and pretty bad lows (both men - same clubs) so its funny that there seems to be a bit of support behind McCarthy and absolutely none behind O'Leary...
Seems to be a bit of rose-tinted memories methinks....

See I dont think you can dis-regard his career at Ireland as that is relevant, as he know international football and knows how to get the best out of a mid ranking international team.

Yeah I would have him as manager.
