Co Adriaanse. Got Willem II Tilburg into the Champions League, which is quite an achievement. UEFA Cup semi-finals with AZ Alkmaar (dumped out on away goals in the semi, in the last minute of extra time). Did the double with Porto.

Known as a 'schoolmeester' (headmaster) type manager in Holland, exactly what the likes of Robbie Keane need.

He's currently 60 and managing a team out in Qatar. International management is something he hasn't done yet, this would be an ideal time for it in his career. You can be sure those Qatari football contracts have release clauses in them for when European jobs come a knocking...

    Souness and Delaney??

One of them is an obscure, stubborn, ignorant, dictatorial, pig-headed character. The other one comes from Co. Waterford.

    So that's a no.

How long will it take the FAI to appoint a new manager?

I remember it took ages after Kerr. And I think it had implications when scheduling for these Euro qualifers took place.
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.

The FAI have a big choice to make in the time frame of the appointment. If they appoint now, they can appoint a mediocre to good manager. If they wait until the draw for the WC qualifying campaign, they can scare off good candidates with a bad group, or bring in a currently unattainable manager with a good group. Any coach would take on the job if there is a good chance of managing in South Africa.
"No regrets, none at all. My only regret is that we went out on penalties. That's my only regret. But no, no regrets." -Mick McCarthy

For the love of God, not Souness...

Paul Jewell is the best available man for the job, the new man doesnt have to be Irish, we have gone down that road before and look where its got us.

What international credientials has Paul Jewell got? Not even European club experience. The only thing he has going for him is that he is currently unemployed. I haven't seen any queue for his services since he opted out of English football.

    Gotta be Roddy Collins...

Or Vicente Del Bosque / Lars Lagerback / Didier Deschamps?

Totally. Hand and Stapleton were acutely embarrassing, I wqas cringing watching it.

See Hodgson has come way down the betting today, I'd be happy with that.....

I thought that as well - that's why I went with Keane in my head. My impression was that all the quotes/inside information came from one player, though I may be wrong. On mature reflection, there are planty of players of whom it could be said they have experience outside the Premier League - all those who have played at a lower level in England or those who played in Scotland or continental Europe (McGeady,Keane, O'Shea on loan to Antwerp etc..)

I see Brady supported my candidate last night on tv and Giles even remembered he managed Sheffield Wednesday

    Big Ron and Bobby Robson.

Stick a white wooly hat on Charlie O'Leary and roll him down a hill in a bath and you'd have the cast of Last of the Summer Wine..

Delaney claims (Newstalk interview) that the FAI is in excellent financial health and that this bodes well for the next appointment. So lets start ruling out the low hanging fruit for the managers job.

Whats the problem that some people on here have with 'yesterdays men'?

Lest anyone forgets its a simple game complicated by men.

The likes of Graham, Souness, Dalglish, Atkinson, Venables et al all have a wealth of experience managing at the highest levels , yet according to some here aren't fit to manage our group of players because the game has "moved on".

Yes - our players are so far ahead of the game at this stage only the youngest, most insightful tactition is up to the job

Are there more players per side nowadays?
    Bigger/Smaller goals?
Do we still have to put the ball in the net?
Score more than the other team to win?
Has the offside rule changed THAT drastically?
How many permuatations of 11 players can you possibly have in a team formation?

A proven track record managing at a high level is whats required. That suggests an ability to harness collective talent and garner it into true team spirit whilst having a credible insight into the game of football. Man management and the ability to sort out some over massaged egos come as an added bonus.

No dount the likes of Drumcondra and all will pick this apart word by word and imprint Y-E-S-T-E-R-D-A-Y-S--M-E-N all over their reply.

Of all the 'yesterdays men' mentioned, I think the most likely outcome is Souness and I for one would be happy if that were to come to pass

In all honesty how many of the names being touted at the moment for the job are filling us with excitement - none

I hope to god O'Dreary dosent get it. I dont think he'll get the respect of the players. I dont think think he is a strong enough character to bring into line prima donnas like keane and ireland.

Any of the other candidates are as previously stated are yesterday's men and few of them are working in management at the moment.

I would love to see someone with the calibre of Klinsmann, Rehhagel or Beenhaker get the job

By the way did anyone notice how mcgeady just walked straight past staunton at the end of the cyprus match without shaking his hand as the others did....... stauntons even looked shocked at this

Piltown, yesterday's man or not, Graeme Souness's record outside of the 2 horse race that is Scotland is pretty poor.

No, the basics of the game haven't changed obviously (although the mindset of the players has). The reason I don't want any of those people is because they've been awful in their most recent managerial positions. And most haven't managed in years. That's why they're Y-E-S-T-E-R-D-A-Y-S--M-E-N .

I have this dreadful feeling we are going to be led to believe we are getting Roy Houghton, and end up with Ray Houghton
That question was less stupid, though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.

Help me, Arthur Murphy, you're my only hope!
