How does Dunphy have a valid opinion? Just because he's an ex-pro doesn't mean jack. The man's a spoofer who hasn't even been to a game in years.
Ireland are rubbish as a result of decades of neglect and an unwillingness to develop the game here. Look at what the Dutch did to revolutionise their game - all we do is moan and hope the British solve our problems.

Staunton did not attend the press conference this morning. That's the sign of a real coward. Finnan, O'Shea and McDonald were the there. I hope O'Shea got asked if he was going to continue making himself available. The most overhyped underage player ever to come through the ranks.

Exactly what I was saying in the pub last night. 30 years of neglect has finally caught up with us. No point in looking for an individual scapegoat. It wont help.

4 years ago we were in a world cup and on the verge of a place in the Q finals. WTF has happened since then? I'm waiting around here in the hope that something dramatic happens from this emergency team meeting and Staunton stands down.

I didn't see the Northern Ireland game but my dad did - he said they all played as if their lives depended on it. Hunger, determination and courage were all in abundance over in Denmark. When was the last time we could say that about our own boys in green? N Ireland don't have any 'stars' as such but they play as a team and would die for their team. Our Premiership boys like Keano, Finnan, O'Shea were nowhere to be seen. I hope they are all ashamed of their performance. I nearly went to Cyrpus but the Stuttgart trip plus the All Ireland final wiped me financially but I still nearly considered it.........thank God I didn't because I'd probably head towards the team hotel and give em a few home truths.

I don't expect us to be world beaters, I just want a team that works hard and gives their all. To top it off Stan's press conference made Sven Goran Eriksson sound inspirational. Says it all really.

You'll NEVER beat the Irish.......you'll just draw with us instead!!!

what a coward - he should be out there taking the flak.

We reap what we sow. Were we the only team at the WC in 2002 with no players playing in their own national league? Without developing our own league we will never again have a decent international team. We can't rely on epl teams to develop our players anymore. The cheaper option for them is african or eastern european players etc.

Will delaney and the fai make the needed investment in the el? No. This is the man who praised the rasing standard in irish football by giving the example of derry in europe and rovers having a draw for man ure tickets.

I watched a lot of the Norn Iron game and agree absolutely with shakermaker1982 ...... The argument about lack of strength / experience in our own team falls away when you see Johnny Evans (a Man Utd reserve who hasn't even played for the first team, and on this 2nd NI cap) perform like he did FOR A MANAGER THAT KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING !!!!

NI have a passion & desire that has been missing from our boys for a long time, and that Stan will never be able to bring back ....... Our lads have obviously lost all confidence (if they ever had any to begin with !) in Stan, and we are now sliding very very quickly down a slippery slope into the lowest reaches of the European rankings. FFS, I think that Wales, (& even San Marino!!!) will take huge heart from our shambles performance, and will fancy their chances against us ... OK, maybe not SM then

Anyway, I will listen to the next press conference with great interest !!

[QUOTE=OwlsFan;549550]Playing Eircom League players instead - always comes up when we have a bad result. Was tried once. I think we got stuffed 6 or 7 in Austria in the 1970s.

The national soccer league will never really get hold. The GAA is imbedded in every country parish - soccer will always play second fiddle in this country, expect possibly in the cities. Invest as much as you can I agree but don't expect miracles.

    QUOTE]
This current squad of players is so bad that you would have to say that some of the top el players would do a better job.

Cork City beat the Cypriot champions in the CL this year. How many of the Cypriot players play in their national league?

How many of Irelands subs last night would even get into 1 of the top el sides?

    Henderson
    Lee
    Alan O'Brien
    Douglas
    St. Ledger
    Foley
    Tabb

I heard Eoin Hand on the radio last night and he stated that after seeing St. Ledger play he wouldn't get a game in a top 4 el side.

de gaffur said after the match that we need a huge transformation in fortune for Wednesday. Is this man for real? Does he really think we were unfortunate yesterday? He's not fit to manage a box of clothes pegs!

I have been to more Irish games than Dunphy. I have supported all of our managers. I have never supported a team playing against Ireland. I never supported the sale of one of Ireland's premier soccer grounds. I don't give a hoot what Dunphy has to say and an Irish supporter he is not) I believe my opinion and all here is more important than his usual bile.

I have yet to read anyone who supported Staunton's appointment on these threads. Dunphy has not supported any of the previous appointments either so to say he was correct makes him what - the same as everyone else. What a lot of us said was, Stan is appointed, let's see how it goes rather than immediately calling for his head without giving him a chance.

Boo the team if you want to. That's your prerogative. I don't boo my own team - I assume that anyone who knows anything about football realises that the fans think the performance in Cyprus was desperate with terrible individual mistakes. They don't need boos to remind them of that and hopefully they'll take the necessary action.

Meanwhile I'll continue to support my country.

They need something. They are a bunch of cheats and cowards who have cheated the nation on one too many occasions. They refuse to face their accusers and will continue to funk their way through games as long as we let them.

But is Andy O'Brien a "cheat and a coward"? He was responsible for 3 of the goals. He was just useless on the night but had played well against Germany only a few weeks ago. Are the Welsh who lost 1-5 at home to Slovakia "cheats and cowards"? Or are they just not up to the standard with poor leadership ?

Cheats and cowards or poorly organised and poorly led and in some instances, poor footballers ?

Wales actually played very well in the first half, and were hit on the counter attack for most of the goals.

When a tactically retarded "manager" picks 4 attacking midfield players, it has to be expected that we're going to struggle to offer suitable protection for the back 4.

"EMERGENCY TEAM MEETING" - according to a report on setanta.com, there was a "heated exchange of views" (apparently several of the players were upset at haivng to turn their off their IPODS while 'duh gaffer" was speaking.....

all of the above - you can make excuses for people but at some stage they have to stand up and take responsibility for themselves.

the poor footballer tag doesnt cut it for me - its an easy get out. Somewhere along the line, these guys forgot that they are wearing the green of a nation and that they represent that nation.

Staunton cant instill pride - that inherint in each and every one of us. You either have it or you dont. It was inherintly absent last night. They cheat us by not honouring the jersey. They are cowards for not taking the responsibility attached with this abject failure.

I don't think O'Brien is a cheat or a coward. I think he is a limited footballer, playing reserve football at Portsmouth, and is prone to terrible gaffs and has been throughout his career. But he's not a cheat or a coward yet he was instrumental in 3 of the goals.

I remember Mick Mc being pilloried for not picking O'Shea by the Man U element of the Irish support. I haven't decided whether he qualifies as a C&C or whether he too is just hopeless. Does he play better for MU in which case there is a problem there?
