James Brown

My 8 yr old son (soon to be 9) is mad about James Brown and spotted the ad in the paper for his gig. Do u think I should take him? He has been to concerts b4 including U2 at Croke Park but am just wondering would I be wise forking out all that money (am a single mum who only works part time so money is not that easy to come by).

Thinking of it as his birthday present but would I be better just getting him something he can keep?

magicme , i think the memories of it would be something he would keep forever , my girlfiriends dad took her to michael jacksdon and guns n roses when she was young and she has such great memories of those gigs that i'm jealous!!

Yeah am seriously considering it. Had to ok it with my elder son coz cant afford to take them both and was hoping he wouldnt be jealous but he said that since he got to see Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Slane for his 9th birthday & Jake didnt get to go that it would be only fair.

You don't go and send yer older son with him. You'll only be cramping their style anyway so let him go in place of you!

Take him to James Brown. He mightn't get another chance to in his life. Seen as he's 9 and James Brown is in his 70s.

Take him.I was at JB concert in Wembly circa 91/92 and he is the man.You will also become the coolest mother ever.Can you imagine him nonchanatly(sp?) telling his mates when he is 15 "yeh my old dear(sorry) took me to a James Brown concert when I was a cub".

Ha! He already can tell them that his mum is cool and took him to see U2 at Croke Park when he was 7 and prior to that took him to see Busted (thank feck his taste in music has improved) at the Oddessy when he was 6 & O2 in the park when he was 5. I like bringing my kids to concerts & intend bringing em to Electric Picnic next year.

Am gonna ring ticketmaster & see if they have any tickets for the disabled section in Olympia otherwise I cant go.

I saw JB at Oxegen 2 years ago & thought he was great. Videoed some of it for Jake and rang him from the gig so he could hear it!

yeah ur right its a no-brainer. Just that my mum is giving out bout "spending that kinda money" on a 9yr old. She never goes to concerts so doesnt get how much they are lifetime memories. My first concert wasnt til I was 16 & was Chris de Burg (god help me!) but my older brother got to go see The Rolling Stones in Slane for his 11th birthday. Not fair! *Pouts and stomps like she is still 16*

Reckon you'll have trouble bringing him to Electric Picnic, they are serious about their age policy.

Its no problem as long as they are 12 or under. Over 12's to 18's are forbidden.

Jake and I went to the Olympia and boy am I glad I took him. His wee face throughout was a picture. God he enjoyed it! The hug he gave me when it was over like he never wanted to stop hugging me will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I saw James Brown, Bo Diddley and Van Morrison at the Point many years ago, and it was James Brown that made it. I had the rather odd impression that the fade-out and comeback thing was only done for television, but no, he faded out right there on stage, and the band leader came out with a cloak and put it over James' shoulders, and helped him off the stage, and James threw it off and tore back into it. They all actually did the "James Brown" thing too, which cracked me up. He was in his sixties then, I dunno where he got the energy from. Horrible man, but jesus he's talented in some departments.

I'd say your kid'll never, ever forget that gig. I'll certainly never forget the one I went to!

Yeah I kinda felt it was like watchin a cartoon of it and that it was like a circus but it was laced with some good music and Jake was blown away by it. He also loved the Olympia & reckoned it was the best birthday present ever (even better than France -v- Ireland 2yrs ago!). Its my 2nd time to see his show was less impressed this time.
