    U-17s in Azerbaijan

Haven't seen this posted yet, the U-17's won 2-0 in their qualifying tournament yesterday against the hosts Azerbaijan to put themselves in the driving seat for one of the 2 qualifying places in the group. A win over Latvia on thursday, who lost their opening game against Azerbaijan and drew against Denmark yesterday will guarantee top spot.

yep goals from Conor McCormack and Gareth Matthews but the lad McCormack plays his trade at Manchester United so itd be interesting to see how he's rated there. anyone know if he has any reserve team appearances? ive never heard of either of them

According to fai.ie, the U-17's are 2-0 up on Latvia in their final game, which would guarantee qualification to the next round, but on livescore.net Ireland are listed as being 4-1 down. Anyone got any other sources for confirmation?

I can't see anything on livescore but you'd have to trust the FAI here.

The Republic of Ireland U17 team today played superb football to open up a 2-0 lead over Latvia after 69 minutes of their contest in the preliminary qualifying tournament in the UEFA Championship.

Ireland went into the game after a scoreless draw with Denmark in their opening match of this mini-tournament and a comprehensive 2-0 win over hosts Azerbaijan.

Ireland knew that a draw would give them the point they needed to clinch one of the two qualifying places on offer and a win would ensure they finished top of the group.

The other match today in the tournament between Denmark and Latvia was scoreless at half-time and Ireland seemed to respond to that news when they broke for the half-time interval.

Manager Sean McCaffrey sent the team out for the second half in very positive mood and they jumped in front after just 47 minutes. Michael Collins of Liverpool claimed the opening goal of the match.

The picture improved further for a confident Irish side as they stretched their lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute. This time it was Ian Daly of Manchester City who scored.

Ireland's two goals in the previous match against Azerbaijan were scored by Conor McCormack (Manchester United) and Garreth Matthews (Norwich City) and the spread of goals between strikers and midfielders must have been pleasing to manager Sean McCaffrey.

Yeah seems a bit detailed for them to get it wrong but you never know.

    Matthews is a defender.

Very strange, livescores still says we lost 4-1!

Well done the lads, topping their group again. We do have a solid recent record at underage level, makes you wonder how the senior team will be doing in a few years!

Incidentally, is the Ian Daly who scored related to Michael Daly in the U-19's? They're both at Man City, and Michael appeared in the FA Youth Cup Final last season against Liverpool
