Did I read that right? Funny I would have thought that Charlton would be paying clubs cash to get rid of him!

Holland has been linked with Portsmouth in some papers, although where he would fit into the side I really don't know.

He's one of these mystery players that managers always seem to fancy. Have never rated him in his prime and he's over the hill now anyway so if I was Charlton I'd bite their arms off for that exchange!!

Yeah but if you know Paddy McCarthy you'd realise Leicester would pay more to get rid of him than Charlton would pay to get rid of Holland.

Leon Best is off to Notts Forest apparently. Bad move IMO.

Yeah, definitely. He was at Notts County as a youth player, so that's a little odd. Leicester also supposed to be interested in him.

I think your opinion of McCarthy is flawed. While he is not the finished article yet, he will go on to play in the Premiership and for Ireland, in years to come.

He's 24 not 19. He should really at this stage be starting to develop into the finished article. Whether he plays for Ireland in the future or not is irrelevant. Paul Butler played for Ireland, it doesn't mean he's good. I would hope we would have a few better options at central defence in the future and not have to resort to playing McCarthy unless he improves dramatically. Next season is a big one for him.

    McShane’s Sunderland move edges closer

    June 7, 2007

Sunderland manager Roy Keane is edging closer to the signing of Irish international defender Paul McShane from West Bromwich Albion.

McShane is tipped to move on this summer following the Baggies’ failure in last week’s Coca-Cola Championship play-off final.

And Keane – a former Manchester United teammate of the young Wicklow man – is the loudest voice in the race to sign the versatile 21-year-old.

Sunderland are in desperate need of new blood in the back line and McShane’s ability to fill various defensive roles – he has played exclusively at centre half for Ireland but at right back for West Brom – makes him an attractive proposition.

No he shouldn't. 24 is still young for a footballer. He should be reaching his peak around 29/30.

Answer me this then, how many footballers who are sh*t at 24 are brilliant then when they are 29? None. At 24 you should be close to your peak as a footballer. Few footballers improve dramatically from 24 onwards.

EVERTON look set to complete the signing of Ireland under-16 captain Karl Sheppard from Shelbourne on scholarship terms.

The Goodison Park club appear to have beaten off competition from Spurs, Celtic and Middlesbrough for the Dubliner's signature.

Reports in Liverpool suggest that Everton are set to fork out approximately €150,000 for Sheppard thus delivering a financial boost to cash-strapped Shels - but the First Division side have yet to confirm the value of the deal.

We Tried To Keep Paddy, Says Allen

    By Bill Anderson

Manager Martin Allen today revealed that Leicester City tried their best to stop Paddy McCarthy joining Charlton.

Club captain McCarthy was sold to the Addicks for 」650,000 yesterday as the exodus from the Walkers Stadium continued with goalkeeper Rab Douglas and striker Mark de Vries becoming the latest players to be transfer-listed.

The Republic of Ireland defender, who had one year left to run on his contract, was offered improved terms to stay at the Walkers Stadium.

However, McCarthy, who joined the Foxes from Manchester City in March 2005 for 」100,000, turned the offer down in favour of a move to the Valley.

Allen said: "The club made Paddy a very good offer to stay, but he expressed his wishes to go. Of course, if he does not want to play for this club and be part of our success, that is his choice. I wish him well."

McCarthy made 69 league starts during his two years with the Foxes, scoring on three occasions.

Last season's campaign was brought to a premature end in February when he injured a shoulder in a freak training-ground accident.

With Gareth McAuley and Patrick Kisnorbo forging a strong central defensive partnership, and Allen bringing in defender Bruno N'Gotty from Birmingham this week, McCarthy faced stiff competition for his place and clearly fancies his chances better at Charlton.

Ironically, City have been linked with Charlton's Bulgarian international Radostin Kishishev, whose place McCarthy will now be vying for.

The transfer-listing of Douglas and de Vries was expected. Both are among the highest-paid players in the squad, but neither featured last season.

Douglas was initially ruled out through injury and de Vries went out on loan to Dutch club Den Haag.

The signing of Danish goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen on Monday also told its own story and Allen said: "I finally got to speak to Mark De Vries and Rab Douglas yesterday afternoon.

"Both players are out of the country and, in an ideal world, I would have wanted to talk to them face-to-face rather than over the phone.

"I have informed both of them that they have been made available for transfer with immediate effect and that it would be in their best interest to get themselves another club."

With three players in, five transfer-listed and one sold, Allen has wasted no time getting to grips with formulating his squad and, hav

That's a different point. How many players have reached their peak at 24. None. How many players have been close to their peak at 24? None.
