Holy Sh!t. His second goal was nearly better.
he has two now (the second a 'delightful finish') within the first 11 minutes.
more of this sort of thing.
Holy Sh!t. His second goal was nearly better.
He's only gone and scored another, and again the type of chance we've seen him missing for Ireland or when his confidence is low.
Anticipated a poor pass at the back, little stepover past the last defender and dinked the ball past Guzan and in off the crossbar. Fair play to him.

Steve Bruce is snapping.... The Jan transfer to Hull has just gone up 1.5m!!!
27 in Jan.if he is going to reach that level he needs to move in January and to a top 6 club.
Silly people on Twitter?
More twits.

That second goal was brilliant. The stepover and the finish were both equally sublime. Hats off to Shane. Third club goal in the last couple of weeks.
It just shows he can do it but needs to become a 15-20 goal a season striker. He's at a decent club that isn't scavenging for results. I thought Carragher paid him a big compliment in the post match analysis saying he is really tough to play against from a CB's perspective. We've known that ourselves of course.
A bit more of this and a bit more maturity and he can step up to the level he is capable of.
Well done though.
Rolllyeyes what? If he wants to become a top striker thats what he needs to do. I dont think he would get into Chelsea, Citys or ARsenals or Liverpools team, but i believe he could get into Spurs or Everton for example.
He is inconsistent in these performances, he will score the odd goal here and there and few magic touches now and again, along with a couple of very good performances, but he lacks the consistency to be a really top performer. ... Oh look what I can do Daddy, I can do it too!

Personally, reckon he's as good as he'll get, a bit inconsistent, but the odd very decent performance so exceptional even the English want to call him up...
I think the question is how good he can be for Ireland though. I think there are many strikers whose international records are better than their club records, but in Long's case they're about similar. A good goal every now and then, occasional brilliance but ordinary enough for the most part.
I think a small improvement in club output could lead to a bigger improvement in international output. As Brian Kerr wrote recently, MON needs to tell him he is the main man.
But even if he thinks he's Messi, he still won't ever have that instinctive eye for timing or a gap that Robbie has. Was it Geysir who commented recently about McClean's low cross in Poland? Great cross that nobody attacked. Keane would have, just as he did Sammon's cross against Faroes. Pure instinct.
Shane Long has replied to those tweets. It's a cracker.

Absolutely brilliant goals, couldn't even say which I liked more. Pity the Euro qualifiers are a year away, hopefully his confidence is up and he gets a regular place in the Ireland team by then.

The first one was certainly a better goal, technically.
Steve Clarke said it was out of this world... a bit like Bergkamp's against Argentina that time, the initial touch at least. I got the feeling he was kind of reluctant to praise him too much though. He mentioned a few times that he's in "a good moment", almost to imply that he's hit and miss. I suppose he's probably got a point if this is what he was getting at. Jamie Carragher then compared his second goal to Kenny Dalglish. Gary Neville was laughing sayings he's gonna love watching this after getting home.
Upon witnessing Long's goals against Villa, numerous ill-informed users questioned why he'd never received an England call-up. Long responded with the following:
