Long guarantees goals if he gets a clear run in the side; Souness on Long.

I'd say he could do with a manager that 'loves ' him . You get an odd player like that .

He made a good chance for himself through determination and physicality .The Goalkeeper made a good save . Perhaps he shouldn’t have taken a long odds shot on but when strikers need goals then who could blame him . It didn’t effect the result as Southampton done easily enough .

Two goals for Charlie Austin will presumably keep Long on the bench for a while.

Yes it will. And more and more, as the weeks go by, it is becoming evident that Shane is a little lost at this level. I would love to see him drop down to the Championship with Reading or Preston or Leeds to find his goalscoring form again. I don't think his financial adviser would appreciate the loss in wages he'd take however.

YES! The scoring famine is over. Shane has opened the scoring at home to Palace after 17 minuted.

The type of chance Rooney would rarely miss. Long's chance presented itself perfectly last night: hit with inside of boot, aim just outside of post, guaranteed goal.

Good point about Rooney, he's good at wrapping his foot around those ones quickly, which results in making them look easy.

He got his annual goal in a bit early though, long wait until 2019.

Would love to see Long at Leeds. He'd tear that division a new one.

I was at the game yesterday. He was really good from the start until he got subbed after taking a knock.

Watched the match. Very tough playing up front on his own. Seems to be his lot these days but he did well and nice finish. Soton were unlucky to lose but it looked like whenever they scored Arsenal just went up a gear and scored themselves.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

it was the tenth goal of the season in the premier league scored by an Irish player - there were 19 in 2016/17

Yeah it was a bit like that. Arsenal had a lot of possession without any purpose. Lots of sideways, risk free passing. On the few occasions they penetrated they scored. Cech is a shadow of his former self.

Long - under guidance/instruction? - very noticeably made little effort to return from offside positions, instead waiting for play to recover and for defence to drift back towards him. Very Inzaghi like! It felt that whilst he made a menace of himself with his pace and presence, he was also quite sparing in his exertions, a bit more calculated than when playing for us.

Cech has been a shadow of his former self for about five years. At this stage he's a shadow of the shadow of his former self.

Ouch... not to worry though - next season Villa will go up and Scott Hogan will rediscover his goalscoring form; Connolly, Cassidy, Obafemi, Afolabi and McAuley will all break into their respective first teams; Mourinho will buy Adam Idah; Sean Maguire and Aaron Drinan will earn upward moves in the January transfer window; and 2018 will be a banner year for Irish goalscorers in the Premier League - at least 75
