I'm sure Shane wants to become a top striker and play for a top club, but unfortunately he doesn't have the skill set. You left Manchester United off the list.

Clarke added: “I’ve said all along Shane would have a big part to play for us this season and he’s proving that on the pitch – and that’s all he can do
Has he? I though he said, "Let's sell Shane to Hull", but the deal fell through!!

Anyhow nice to see Shane playing so well, right at the moment he is second to none in the Premiership, remains to be seen if he can continue
his good form but he is only 26.

Current top 6 then ; ) I never said they would be top 6. Could have said Soton too then.

He showed 2 nights ago, and has in the past glimpses that he has the ability, but lacks consistency. That was my point.

I suppose you could say Long on ability Short on consistency especially as Glenn Whelan, just 5'11 completed all his 68 passes in his last match.

I got the feeling he was kind of reluctant to praise him too much though. He mentioned a few times that he's in "a good moment", almost to imply that he's hit and miss. I suppose he's probably got a point if this is what he was getting at. Jamie Carragher then compared his second goal to Kenny Dalglish. Gary Neville was laughing sayings he's gonna love watching this after getting home.
"In a good moment" is one of those bizarre clichés that has crept into football in the last few years with the preponderance of non-English native speaking managers. Presumably Clarke has picked it up from working under guys like Ranieri and Mourinho.

Ancelotti was the one I really noticed it with but Clarke quit before he took over. A lot of the non-native English-speaking managers say it now and Clarke has worked with a few of them. I've always guessed it was a straight translation from Italian or Spanish.

Yeah I got a bit mixed up. It was actually Carragher that compared it to Bergkamp, I picked that up wrong. It was actually the presenter that said he's going to love watching this after getting home as well, not Neville. Neville was laughing and said something like "Bergkamp?? Dalglish?? next they're going to put a statue of him outside the ground!"

Well the above 2nd goal proves he can be. Its just how consistent he can be. Perhaps the journalist just realises that Shane is in a good moment and wants to give praise where praise is due.
I thought you were off the drink Ronnie?

I scored a left-footed half volley from 22 yards once, that left the goalkeeper staring at space. I guess all I was lacking was consistency

Unfortunately in Long's case I think he is consistent at wasting good chances. Of course, if he becomes the main man and builds up a run of form I think that could change. He clearly has the talent.

On the positive he has gotten himself into the positions needed to waste those chances. On the negative seem to recall a good percentage of those chances not working the goalie.

Perhaps your career as a goalkeeper didn't work out because you spent the whole game hanging around outside the opposition box

That goal was after I moved to London. I was 34 and didn't tell anyone I used to be a goalie!

I dislocated my ankle 30 minutes after scoring was carried off and had to go to hospital. In a way I saw it as poetic justice. I had been mad about football for 26 years, but rubbish at it. Then I scored a wonder goal and generally was playing a blinder at centre-back - everything landed on my head that day - and minutes later my career was over, but it was a fitting end. Even the tackle that busted my ankle was when I saw the ball earlier than I normally did. I was admiring my goal-saving clearance heading over the touchline then pain and a large cracking noise when the late tackle came in.

I tried making a comeback aged 37 for Ardee Bhoy's team in Maida Vale but after a couple of games I knew I was flogging a dead horse. Nothing landed on my head, every stray pass resulted in an opposition goal and I was 5 yards too slow.

I guess that's where AB gets his loathing for with defenders who are not Beckenbauer.
from the trauma of witnessing Stutts, past his prime, try to make a comeback.

Tbf, Stutts wasn't as bad as he makes out, albeit a tad slow. Not that I can talk...nor would I compare him or anyone with the 'Der Kaiser', well not that I've managed...
Except one guy who'd previously played for Sarajevo and Bosnia (before they were an independent country)!!
