Unfortunately for Long and Obafemi, from the point of view of their position in the Southampton forward line pecking order, the three goals came from Ings (2) and Austin.

That's true but Austin and Ings got no assist now did they?

Long was brought on for Redmond, who limped off injured. After finding the back of the net (ok, it was disallowed, but he did get the ball over the line) and a really good assist, Long should be involved against Huddersfield on Saturday.

Nice to see Long make a good first impression under the new boss. I think Obafemi will be OK too. Hasenhuttl also gave a youth team player a debut as well after watching a U-23 match. Lots of good young Irish players at Southampton and it looks like this manager isn’t afraid to give youth a chance.

fair play to him. Austin is such a lazy frontman who adds nothing from a team work perspective and Ings is made of glass which means he will get plenty of chances in the side. He has seen off Carrillo and gabbidini and is still there. Doubt they will go big in this window for a striker given how burned they were by Carrillo last jan

    This is an interesting line:
At 32 years of age, data proves he’s quicker than he was in his mid-20s, so there’s no doubting his professionalism and application to the job.
Hopefully that means he's good for this campaign and the next - be nice if he could top Quinn for both Premier League and international goals

It would be lovely to see him getting some of that type of service from midfield that mcgoldrick got on Tuesday . So much of his recent outings for us have just involved chasing and fighting for totally aimless balls

It’s interesting that the data show that about his speed. I’d like more details. Over what distance?

My eyes/memory tell me he was more explosive in his younger years. He’s not slow now but my sense is he no longer has that next level acceleration he once had.

Not sure about distances covered, but as recently as 2016/17 he clocked the fastest speed in the EPL, at 35.31 km/h - https://www.premierleague.com/news/403347 - if he could keep that speed up, he would cover 100m in about 10.02s, making him the fastest Irishman ever (notwithstanding the standing start of Paul Hession's actual record). It's just a bit of a pity that he hasn't turned such a potent weapon into hundreds of goals over his career.

Anyway, he did get on the scoresheet against Liverpool on Friday, which is good - https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/47742713

So with him, McGoldrick and Collins scoring this weekend, Hogan on the mark last weekend and Callum Robinson back in action also, our forward line is starting to look promising, even if there's no more major teenage breakthroughs over the next few months.

Who will be the next Irish striker to get that number of premier league goals?

Scored today again against Wolves. I'm sure Mick McCarthy is very happy with this. Shane's worst club goalscoring form coincided almost parallel to Martin O'Neill's reign.

Take your pick from Obafemi, Connolly, Idah, Cassidy or Parrott - possibly even Callum Robinson, if his season has merited a move to an EPL club

Yes - Mick whispered in his ear "you're actually a good goal scorer" and all of a sudden, he's Sergio Aguero. Seriously, hopefully this is a sign that he's ready to chase down Niall Quinn's mark in the qualifiers

Is there nothing that can't be pinned on poor Martin
