I can see why it happened, especially if Kenny considered the 9 McGoldrick’s for the second game. I can also see Kenny trying to tell Idah that he belongs and the number being a show of faith.
I can also see why Long would be upset, especially if he didn’t know until he saw the jersey. Numbers are kinda special, people build up huge attachment to them, as illogical as it is - and part of the thing with seniority and with strong personalities is they can demand numbers - not in a bad way - just their presence means that others defer to them.
I think if he’d gone to Kenny to talk about it, it would have been sorted out with no issue. Equally I can understand why Long wouldn’t want to bother the manager with an issue as trivial as that - even if, ultimately, bottling it up was worse for both parties
