    Sligo boss has Euro dream

Sligo Rovers manager Sean Connor has spoken of the possibility of his side claiming a place in Europe.

The westerners are attacking Europe on two fronts – they currently lie fourth on the Premier League table and are also safely through to the Last Eight in the FAI Cup. It’s a remarkable achievement for a team that was playing Division One football last term and the manager admits that qualification for Europe could be on the cards:

“I don’t want to make too much of it at this early stage because there is so much football still to be played, but European football is a possibility and it would be absolutely wonderful.

“I wonder when a team last qualified for Europe in their first season after promotion?”

Sligo host fifth-place Cork City on Tuesday evening, September 12, where victory would move them five points clear of the defending champions.

"Now we can start concentrating on Cork. Yes a win Tuesday would be fantastic because I think a win Tuesday night would make it very hard for Cork to catch us.G ames in hand? I don't care, you have to get the points in the bag. A win on Tuesday night would boost the confidence of not just the football club but the town immensely. Cork won’t fancy coming here but we know it is going to be difficult. I am sure they are dying for the season to get back on the road again so it makes for an interesting night"

Is the ground up to UEFA Cup standards? It's one of the two Premier Division grounds I haven't been to yet.

I remember Sligo played FC Bruges in 1994. I still lived in Belgium by then, and the local TV did a report on Bruges' trip to Sligo. It was before the stadium was modernised, the FCB players said they never saw such an old surreal ground in their whole career! They did mention as well that the welcome was exceptionally friendly, and approx 100 or 200 Sligo also made the trip to Bruges for the return. I believe the final scores were 1-2 in Sligo and 3-1 in Bruges?

Nor sure what would be surreal about a trip to the showgrounds even pre the new stand.

Fair enough the dressingrooms were basic but it wasnt like they had to get changed in a portakabin.

The shed was rockin that night - possibly my favourite rovers atomoshpere or all time

no rovers qualified a season afterwards, 96/96 for the intertoto-cup. after promotion we finished 8th. although we were in europe in the 94/95 season because of the FAI cup win. i think sean's referring to league placing qualification though. in recent years i think bray finished 4th in 00/01 after they got promoted, so that's the best in recent times i think. our neighbours galway united also finished 4th in 93/94 after promotion. nobody's finished higher than 4th after promotion i think, so therefore nobody's qualified for european through league placings in the season after promotion - always open to correction though
