Big Davy won't let us ease up: Spike

Glenn Ferguson wants Linfield to be in top form when their defence of the Irish Premier League title begins in two weeks time. And that's bad news for Larne and Glenavon who the Blues still have to face in CIS Cup group matches.

A 3-0 win against Lisburn Distillery in their last outing secured Linfield's passage to the quarter-final stages, but there will be no let up from the Blues after starting the season with an average of three goals a game in both Europe and domestic competition.

larne played linfield yesterday!

unfortunately the game ended 3-2 to linfield with a 92nd minute winner by ex-larne striker mark dickson

great game all the same and larne certainly gave linfield the frights.
linfield's mcareavey was red carded for being a numbnut.

How did Linfield look, i know its hard to tell, early days and all that but will it be more of the same??

well, midfield is still good, and they have about 5 billion decent strikers (ok, about 3 senior teams worth), but i'm not sure last years defenders are still at their best. they do have another couple of decent young defenders in their squad to step in though, if only big davy ever gave them a game.
yeah, all in all, probably another year of them winning most things but they've been making it harder for themselves than they need to so far.

it'll almost certainly have been the refs/cats/divine interventions/the pitchs/big davys fault.
up until yesterday glenavon had played 5, lost 5 by the way.

A lacklustre performance from The Blues, but hardly the end of the world.

They had already won the group and qualified for the quarterfinals of the competition.

A much better performance required next week in the league opener against Cliftonville. I expect normal service to be resumed.

Every second rate team in the country raises their game against Linfield - it is after all the other teams' "Cup Final". Having said that Glenavon deserved to win!

Our last two domestic defeats were in what only can be described as "nothing matches"! The defeat against Distillery last season, at the end of the League campaign and when the Legue was being presented, was hardly the end of the world. Yesterday's defeat was in similar circumstnces - we have topped the group in the CIS and nothing was to be gained in real terms. It has also got the "monkey off our back", now that we have lost our unbeaten record.

Don't think there is anything positive that can be taken from that game to be honest, hopefully just a bad day at the office. We were totally outplayed and beaten by the better team, they wanted it more.

The best spin doctor in the world couldn't say anything positive about yesterday's result from a Linfield perspective.

Cliftonville were better organised, played good football and wanted it more. They could have won by a greater margin.

My main gripe is that we were too narrow on the pitch and were so lacking in width. We had two strikers on the bench; both came on and played in midfield!

Our only player to come out with any credit was the goalkeeper, Alan Mannus!

Unusual to see McAreavey go asleep as he did on the 2nd goal. What a belly O'Hara has on him - can't imagine he's beaten too many players to the ball in recent times!

He does, regularly.

Just ask the Linfield defence. O'Hara is big, not fat.

Yes the Linfield manager often uses the line about tams raising their game against them. He didn't on Saturday because it was Linfield who should have been raising their game against the only unbeaten team this season in the IL.
