    Next Leader of the PD's?

    Can I have a poll?

    • Liz
    • McDowell
    • Parlon
I want Liz to win because she's a bit of alright and I'd prefer to have to look at her than the other two.
She's the only fit politician in government!

It'll be McDowell surely. Isn't O Donnell in danger of losing her seat anyway?

They're all in danger of losing their seats. Big divide in the party. McDowell has upset a lot of people. He's very aggressive in his approach.

Amazingly, out of all the PD's i only know McDowell *spits* and Harney.

They dont tell us much about them up North.

McDowell is about as popular up north as a full irish breakfast is in Iran

    Who are the other ones?

I can picture and name most senior members of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour, Greens and the likes, but not the PD's?

It looks like odds-on McDowell, or "McDo-f-all" as the next PD leader. You do fear for the country if he takes over. With his track record as Justice Minister, and his notorious fractious political relationship with Bertie, it does raise serious questions over the stability of the current coalition. One row, and McD will probably pull the PD's out of government. Then we'll be faced with an early election, political instability, with many current projects on hold, and if a new government takes power, they will be reviewed, and possibly abolished by the new administration.

Harney was a stabilizing influence in the coalition, and was a TD with a highly successful track record as Minister for Trade and Employment, and back at the turn of the 90's as Environment minister. McDowell is a different kettle of fish altogether, known for hardline bark, but little bite, except to label Bertie as "Ceaucescu" over the Abbotstown project, and has a woeful record as Justice Minister with the outdated consent law fiasco, undelivered election promises about extra Gardaí, together with violent crime at record levels, and in some parts of the country, out of control.

The PD's have a track record of pulling out of coalition and threatening to do so on other occasions. Put two uncomprimising TD's in Bertie and McDowell working together in coaltion, and there could well be fireworks sooner than next summer. Bertie better watch his step with McDowell around.

I think Liz O'Donnell is too nice to be a leader. McDowell wants the job and will lead. He could alienate people in the other faction though. PDs are always 1 election away from oblivion. Opinion polls matter little to them as they don't challenge on national basic but pick and choose seats.

PD's have a niche market. Personally I think McDowell will alienate that market unless he brings one of the softies to promenance. He was always bad cop to Harney's fat cop. He needs someone who looks soft alongside him for PR reasons

I voted for Liz O'Donnell for no other reason then I'd give her one and I'd prefer to be looking at her whenever the PD's leader is interviewed than any of the rest of 'em ! Id be suprised if Mickey McD wasn't their next leader

Thats a sad reason to vote for someone. Its not as if by voting for her you'd get to give her one.

I voted McDowell, because I think he's most likely to win (isn't that what the poll is asking, not 'who would you like to win'?)
Between LO'D and MMcD I'm not sure who I'd prefer, but I'd certainly not like to see Parlon win. As Pete said, Parlon is a cowboy (in more ways than one!)

I actually like the way McDowell is prepared to take on SF & IRA (so called republicans) and point out their obvious inconsistencies (especially when very few others are prepared to / are brave enough to). On the other hand, his handling of other areas of Justice is a bit sketchy and I'm not convinced about the merrits of the Garda reserve.

I'm fairly neutral on Liz O'Donnell; she did good stuff on the GFA IIRC, but I don't know much else about her. Also, I don't think she's all that attractive, certainly no Olwyn Enright! (http://www.finegael.ie/schools/image3.jpg)

I voted for "I hope they all burn in a fiery pit in hell. No offense like" but only because there was no option for "I hope they all burn in a fiery pit in hell, and all offence meant"

That Enright bird looks like a right minger compared to Liz, in my opinion!

McDowell as leader of the PD's will ensure their utter annihilation at the next GE.

Good riddance to the most nastiest right-wing shower of cnuts ever to have blighted Irish politics.
