No 1 - Tórshavn. Nothing's come close yet.

    After that, probably...
    No 2 - Basel 2003
    No 3 - Stuttgart
    No 4 - Paris
    No 5 - Lisbon 1995

    And then a huge gap
    No 6 - Cyprus 2005

Leaving out the tournaments as they would be the top 4.

    1) Tehran 2) Tel Aviv 3) Bursa 4) Brussels 97 5) Copenhagen 92 ...........
    15) Stuttgart 06.................................50) Paris 04 51) Cyprus 05 ....last) Skopje 99

I counted over 60 Republic of Ireland away games I've been to incl U21 and youths and major finals since 1981.

I enjoyed Stuttgart maybe not as much as I could have due to being on painkillers and anti-inflammatories thus unable to drink much. However I wouldn't have it up there in the top trips.

I enjoyed my trip to France in 04 as Troyes was great even singing Finn Harps songs at 3am(don't ask) but thought Paris was dirty, overpriced and full of people who knew nothing about football along for the beer. Great performance from the team though.

Been to about 20 away games & i reckon amsterdam (twice ) & paris were bottom of the list,(ignoring the results , amsterdam was full of helmets & 'alrite buds!'.The french in paris were one ignorant shower.Top 5 :
    1 Tel aviv...2 Tallinn... 3 Bydgosczc... 4 Stuttgart... 5 Basel
As a city , the craic in kobe during 2002 was mental.Tokyo very ish !

It really depends on how good a time you had yourself in distinguishing best away trips, rather than it being directly about the city, result or atmosphere in general, those things have been good for probably all the trips listed above, but if you end up having a ****e night out it will be the difference.

I agree with gspain's comments about Paris being dirty and overpriced and with a high proportion of muppets around, wasn't mad about it, but the fact that I had the hangover from hell the day after the game contributes to my negative reflections perhaps. Stuttgart locals were more friendly than paris in general, hotel was cleaner and friendlier.

I've only been to a handful of Ireland aways, but Stuttgart was definately top, partly cause our gang that were over had a ball, no mental hangovers trouble and fell in with a sound bunch of German fans and drank all night after the game.

In Basel '03 the woeful performance and result took a lot of the gloss of it, plus the beer was very dear.

    Zagreb Nul Points?

Surprised the Croatian capital didn't make it on to any other lists, but as mentioned above, your memories are dictated by personal experiences.

    it is well deserved.

Iran was amazing - locals were really welcoming. The Persian people have a reputation of being the most hospitable in the world and it is well deserved.
Tehran isn't that pretty but Esfahan was lovely and I believe there are amazing sights elsewhere.

The noise and atmosphere in the stadium was unbelievable.

Drink was available too for those who wanted it.

I'd highly recommend it as a place to visit.

Note I'm not getting into politics here. I judge the people as I find them.

had the pleasure of Stuttgart in 88, malta in 89 (before we went to Italy) Stuttgart on historical signifance alone has to take pride of place. I may be one of a few that have actually taken flights to watch Ireland playing (on telly!!) when exiled in ne wmexico, USA, we used to fly to Phoneix to watch the boys in green. Holland in Sept 2001 was a nice story. Got in to the boozer at 6.45 am, to the sight of about 20 orange shirts all seated in front of the screen and only 2 paddies, yours truly included. anyways, a bunch of intel lads that were stationed in phoenix came in at 10am thinking it was in time for kick off, (and oblivious tothe result) to see me standing on stage, ****ed singing about the magnificient result!!. I took the pi$$ out of the dutch, and the intel boys while a magnificient day on the beer ensued. I promised all the intel boys some alarm clocks (with intel inside!) for christmas!! Its not easy scampering around the states (ouotside of boston and ny) to support ireland, but I always get a great lift when i see thousands of irish at every stadium around the world when the boys in green play! good on you lads - keep it going, and keep the faith!!

Its obviously all about the football but its the group you travel with, the atmosphere about the day of the game and at the game and taking in the sights of somewhere where you mighn't normaly travel to on a holiday etc.

Best 5 for me excluding World Cup 02 are Paris, Stuttgart, Moscow, Tel Aviv &
    Bydgosz.

went to paris directly from stuttgart to visit a friend and it is without doubt a rip-off for the garglers amongst us. I paid €10.00 for a 33cl bottle of 1664 in a bar on the champs elysees Only perk was that I got my hand on tickets for the france-italy match in the italian end and at face value from my trip to this establishment!

    as trips go

    (i) Tel Aviv
    (ii) Stuttgart (close second)
    (iii) Glasgow '02
    (iv) Basel 2
    (v) Basel 1
(vi) Cyprus (ayia napa super dump)

    all good craic

age has meant that these are the only ones ive been on to date but but am paid up for remaining euro 08 games
