Maybe Eoin was right in some respects, when Paul finally started in midfield we lost 1-4 at Home to Denmark
Eoin hardly used Mick, only once afair, mostly it was Lawrenson and O'Leary or Moran at centre half.
Charlton didn't disturb the centre half pairing and deployed McGrath elsewhere even at LB. It would be a nice problem to have now, where to squeeze in a player like McGrath.
The thread has gotten out of hand when likening McGeady to paul McGrath & saying mCGeady should be first player on the team sheet.
McGeady has played numerous games for Ireland & while showing some good moves clearly has a long long way to go before he could be considered an automatic first choice let alone first player on the team sheet.
I wouldn't start with Duff and McGeady in a 4-4-2 midfield... Not until we have a comfortable centre midfield pairing, which we don't have, and it doesn't look like we will for a while.
Exactly what Hand and some fans thought of McGrath when he started playing for Ireland! I can remember Hands comments about McGrath when he played McCarthy ahead of him. When Charlton took over he immediately began mentoring McGrath at the Iceland tournament (he wanted to make McGrath captain. McGrath said no) and there began his rise as one of Ireland's greatest ever players. I was at a St Pats v Rovers game when McGrath was outstanding against Liam Buckley and the hoops frontline. The best performance from a player I had ever seen in the LOI. Pats won 3-0. McGeady is not the same type of player as Paul McGrath as McGrath was not Liam Brady. But he has the same potential. And it would be a shame if it also takes a change of management to see that.

Any relation to the Jack Charlton that managed us and played McCarthy at centre half until he retired and played McGrath at right back and midfield for those years.
For the record I thought Paul McGrath was the best player I've ever seen in an Irish shirt bar none.
A few quotes from McGeady and Stokes:

If only it was as simple as you so wished Pete. Traditionally the games after the midweek Champions League outings are always tough and statistically results don't always go well. The term "Euro Hangover" comes from this.
IMO these are the bread and butter games that win you league titles and that's two hard fought 1-0 victories Celtic have ground out following their Champions League ties. I'm sure that's all that matters to Strachan and the rest of the supporters.

I have been convinced this season that Mc Geady should start for us against Cyprus. I am not a Celtic fan but having watch his performances I think he should play on one wing with Duff on the other. They can swap wings throughout the game if they like.
Lets be bold and go with these two guys. Mc Geady is on better form that Duff is at the moment and confidence is huge in football so lets use one of the few players we have that is on fire.

I agree. I think Dr. Peepee is right that without a good central midfield this may be a bit of a risk, but sod it, put your best players out & let them take the game to the opponent. We should not fear Cyprus FFS.
Jumping threads a bit I'm glad Youngirish ahs changed his mind on Stephen Ireland. He's played very little football all year and is lightweight, though obviously talented. Too early for him to start a must-win game in my mind.
I'm convinced O'Shea will start and my inclination would be to pick Miller beside him and hope to **** he plays one of his good games. He's hit & miss at club level to say the least.
McGeady's step-over, back-heel, Cryuff-thing from the weekend, love the way the defender falls over trying to track him!

It should be called the McGeady spin at this stage.

I think it's also the spin he did which was applauded by Nesta but there's no clips of the Milan match.
Apparently yesterday was McGeadys first goal since January last season. Think he needs to be scoring more than that considering its the SPL hes playing in...
Didn't McGeady miss 3 or 4 months from January?
It's a bit like saying Robbie Keane hasn't scored since April (which was all over the press last week), like he had any chance of scoring in May, June or July.
Anyway, show me a midfield or wing candidate for Ireland with a better goalscoring pedigree. He's not picked for his goalscoring.
I think it's best to just say first goal this season. He started 3 games after January last season. He does need to be scoring more all the same but has been unlucky not to score already. He must have hit the woodwork 4 or 5 times this season and Gravesen robbed a goal off him on Saturday.
Pete you can pick holes in any players performance and who should we play as our first 11 and i am sure I could come up with reasons not to play all of those players with the exception of Shay Given when fit. We dont have many world class players on form. But Mc Geady is playing very well week in week out. He has been the best player in the SPL this year.
