From todays tribune. Houllier not returning calls!

Houllier claimed that he had always operated by the policy that "his word was his bond" and felt that unless he could persuade the FFF to soften its stance, he would have to turn the job down. The negotiations were then interrupted when Houllier had to go into hospital for a few days and the only assurance he could offer the delegation was that me might be able to come later in the year . . . around August . . . but that would have to be kept secret.

When the Givens-lead delegation rejected this however, they tried to get Houllier to work out an exit-deal with the FFF but once he stopped returning most of their calls late last week, it was clear to them that a second preferred candidate was out of the face.

can befair close a book, is it not done by people willing to take odds. so as long as there is some fool out there there will always be bets on it. Am I right in this is how betfair works, that anybody can be the bookie.

Trappo will be bringing in Gentile as his assistant and not Brady. I hope this is not some type of leverage for Trap to get a better contract at Salzburg

They do suspend markets sometimes, I remember hearing about a Cheltenham Gold Cup betting book where the favourite died a few months before the race. Before it was announced his odds raced up on betfair and quite a few mugs took them before the market was suspended.

ok but that is slightly different to now as nothing is official, so Betfair are not going to intervene in the market. Howerver Paddy Power and Ladbrokes are not stupid so they close the book on Trapatoni as they dont want to get burnt.

It'll get to a point where there'll be no odds available to back (literally seconds after the announcement is made). They'll close the market within about 5-10 minutes of that.

Im sorry but does Fanning pull quotes like this out of his arse?
    Another:
"There are some concerns that this could increase the player dissatisfaction, especially among those players, led publicly by Shay Given, who have asked why Venables has not already been appointed."

    Wishful thinking more like.

Again, what would Given say about Trapattoni?

There's a good beer ad over here for Hobgoblin, a real ale, with a goblin asking "what's the problem lager boy, afraid you might taste something?". I get the impression some of our players are afraid they may actually learn something. They want Tel for the craic, but here's news boys, you get rewards for working hard not enjoying yourselves.

I read Dion this morning and could almost taste the sour grapes.

He's just gutted that El Tel won't be taking him out for dinner or an all expenses trip to his hotel in Spain.

That's the thing, he didn't even comment on Venables. He just said he felt the new manager should have been appointed by now. Fanning says otherwise.

"I thought it would have been done by now," said Given. "The World Cup games were decided the other day, so I really felt the manager should have been in charge for that. That's not been the case for whatever reason, we don't know, but the sooner we get him in, the better.''

If it is Trapattoni i hope the irish media give him a chance although i doubt it. What will Paul Hyland in the herald have to say about that considering he has benn telling us venables was a dead cert from day one.

I dunno SuperDub, I reckon Trap would eat our media for breakfast. They've no experience of dealing with anyone of his status. The Italian media can be ferocious.

If Brady is involved the RTE boys will be supportive and only if Trap dropped flair for functionality without getting results would Dunph and co. turn on him.

Hyland is an irrelevance, an annoying one, though credit where it's due he responded to several emails I sent at the start of this process.

Obviously he has a reputation for being defensive but he'll still play 3 or 4 attacking players and give them more freedom than most. For Italy he played 1 up top with Totti, Del Piero and Camoranesi supporting. Even Perrotta who played as 1 of the 2 midfield players is an attacking player, much more so than Steven Reid but similar style. With Benfica he played Nuno Gomez up front with Simao, Geovanni (the guy Ireland is keeping out of the Man City team) and another supporting.

We'll get to see our best attacking players under Trap anyway. They'll probably be starved of possession a lot of the time but at least they'll be conserving energy. One thing though is Keane and the other attacking players won't be required to track back. The typical Italian way is 7 outfield players are required to defend. The other 3 wait for the break.

Our players will gain valuable knowledge working under him and will actually have to think about the game rather than playing on instinct.

Lads just played 3 games on Pro Ev with the one up front against Brazil and Serbia and Norway. We drew first match lost to Serbia and won with a last minute goal against Norway after I brough Doyle on. So a mixed bag.
