i wouldnt say usage, more so used by whom. it doesnt relaly bother me if a northern nationalist calls the 26 counties the free state, its the "other" section that use it( in a derogatory and patronising way yes )that I find offensive.

I think in derry and tir eoghain its used because they feel left out, particularly in derry, not the waterside though but not in an offensive manner.

Im not here to insult or offend anyone. My use of the term 'free state' comes from that thats what we call it in strabane. Its normal in the border counties.

Btw the original point of the thread was the fact that only 4 years after a book was published detailing exact details of a bomb in mansion house that was never discovered that the authorities only now go looking for it. thats worrying

Depends on how the bomb was made but the fact that it never detonated and given its age, it more than likely degenerated into a safe state over a decade ago.
If it didn't go off when it was intended to and hasn't gone off since, why is there a sudden urgency to find it?

it was made with powergel according to the book, which is a very unstable and dangerous substance.

Then again ud be surprised if they still had the same fire extinguishers they did in 1981

You should report this matter to FIFA/UEFA immediately.
The Englishmen came over in the year 2005
But little did they know that we'd planned a wee surprise
Sir David scored the winner, and Windsor Park went wild
And this is what we sang...

Given that "Free State" has been considered insulting by a number of people on this thread (even though not considered insulting by others), I'm wondering if any action will be taken regarding those congratulating "The Nordies" and "Norn Iron" on their victory over the Spaniards.

No, because topics are populated by joe soaps with an opinion on fact, so it's no more relevant that any post on this forum.

Well then surely its just a point of view. Do you find the term Republic of Ireland offensive? Its not the official name. I couldn't care less and I don't see anything offensive about the term Free State though its a term I would never use personally.

Fair enough so. There were some people who took offense to the term "Free State" though and threatened to shut the thread which I though was a bit OTT.
